Royal Calcutta Turf Club

Any racing in January? Do people gamble? If so, what's the betting program like?

They have their own website. I couldn't figure out the numbers though. Paramutual maybe. But some races looked like they had like 25 horses. I'm guessing they run in a straight line like in Britain. Not quite Santa Anita, but it sounds like an adventure. can't imagine the touts there with the 'hot tips' ... sure it would be an adventure into leftover British pomp ... can't imagine the Indian emotions cheering on a horse.

I went to their website too, huh??? I got the visiting hours down. And those numbers. Someone reading this MUST have the inside scoop!

Santa Anita IS an adventure! Can you imagine what this could be like? I'm ready! I'm already a hysterical screamer over a 90 rp show ticket!

On a ship on the Singapore/Bangladesh/India run, I was a regular visitor to the races in Calcutta.

An emotional Bengali screaming at a horse he has bet on which is now losing can be quite an experience to watch.

I remember one guy (horse was Transom, I think) screaming- at the TOP of his lungs- 'Transom!!!' - with varying degrees of hope (initially), panic (a little later) and despair (at the end). The effect is much like the doppler effect of a locomotive's whistle when it is approaching the stationary observer.

I'm like that too! Especially after a few gin and tonics!

SO, you get all this action without even betting? What's the story?

One doesn't have to bet, but it helps

(You can go to the races without betting. There is an entry charge, can't remember but it is small)

Very funny to imagine. I go here once or twice a year. Great people watching venue. Betting is fun too, like a movie. Then people say such personal often funny things to the horses and jockeys.

"Your sire was a dog."

"Stupid guy didn't even pull out his whip. I betcha he had money on number 8."

So in India? I just can't imagine.

Did he then go on to murder someone in a Dresden courtroom?

This site is getting surreal

This is a nice touristy UT of the track

I have no idea how betting is done on horse races in India. Is it win, place, show?

And may we presume that is on the hot favorite, and there are 4 or 5 horses in the race? I'm sure if you went someone would be happy to teach you the betting rules. Its also a pretty fair bet that the old money English would be out.

They run clockwise and the track at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club is a sort of rounded triangle or trapezoid, unlike the usual oval in North America (where the races are run counter-clockwise).

Here's an overview of how betting works from the website for the Royal Western India Turf Club. http://www.rwitc.com/code/rwarticle.aspx?sta=y&pid=54 You can do either what we'd call parimutual betting, or bet with a bookie (but the latter do only larger bets). I suspect the system is the same in Calcutta. One interesting feature is that you can either bet at fixed odds (the odds as of the time you place your bet) or at odds that change until betting is closed.

Sita, I had no idea you were a racing fan! Maybe we should plan an IM meetup at Golden Gate Fields!

Did you know that the owners of the horse that won this year's Belmont Stakes are an Indian-American couple (both doctors, I think)? For the non-racing fans here, the Belmont Stakes is the third leg of the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont).

Thanks for the great info, Dzi. I like the races from time to time, who could miss an opportunity to go to the real Raj thing. Plus ten rp minimum bets!

I noticed the horses were running in the opposite direction from what we're used to. That will add an interesting dimension to it as well.
