Pre-Puja Book Fair in Boi Para

There is a very interesting story in today's Telegraph about Varnaparichay, the book mall currently being built on College Street.

As from 11th September there will be a ten day book fair held there, the Boi Parbon.

A very good news for book lovers.

Does anyone have information about what will happen to the old footpath book stalls after this mall is complete and operational? Will the authorities do away with these stalls?

I miss College Street

Book fair just before the pujas - isn't it ill-timed ? People are in the mood of spending on new garments now, not new books.

This book fair is specially for " Puja Barshikis "
or Puja numbers of different publications, I know
that quite a number of bengalees spent a sizeable
amount for this numbers.

At least me personally will be there .

Cheers

Indeed, chief, I just read that some of the specially produced Puja magazines will be copies of Kishore Bharati, Shuktara and Nabakallol.

Would you be kind enough to explain to me exactly what a puja magazine is?

A puja magazine is called pujabarshiki in bengali.

Almost every newspaper and magazine comes up with a fat(around 400 to 900 pages) magazine just before the puja.

they cost between 50 to 100 rupees.

It contains poems, short stories, novels, articles, travelougues etc.
This will all be original works - though some articles may be reprinted.

kishore bharati and shuktara are childrens magazine. nabakallol is a film magazine(I didnot know it was published any more).

Some popular pujabarshikis(which I buy) are -
anandabazaar, desh, anandamela, anandalok, sananda, bartamaan, shuktara etc.

when I was a kid, the puja "feeling" would start with my mom asking the newspaper boy to deliver anandamela and shuktara pujabarshikis as soon as they were published. i still have all of them at home - about 12 volumes each of anandamela and shuktara - and a few of sandesh as well.

I miss College Street too!

I lived near there for first 22 years of my life! Opposite the Fire brigade (The Damkol - famous for the Best Durga-Pujas Pandals in the 60s and huge crowds) just behind College street. In fact, I learnt swimming in College Square tank in 1963!

I was planning to be in Kolkata for the Pujas this year ... but now I will be in Ladakh or Spiti then
.

Right you are, Nayan, but sadly this is true about Bengali magazines - at least, the children's ones. Puja barshikis bring back fond memeories of childhood. But i really doubt whether that quality of Anadamela is maintained now. Although i don't read them now, but when i did on a very few occasions, i felt that the authors don't know what children like. The simplicity is gone. Don't say that life is no more simple these days. Even today every child will fall for Satyajit ray, Shirshendu, Pandab Goenda ..... Chandmama, Shuktara - those beautiful mags - are they really as beautiful now ?

The first film magagine to appear was called "Ultorath" Why this particular name I can't say. Ultorath literally means reverse charriot. Rathajatra is a festival where Lord Jagannath along with Subhadra & Balaram goes to aunt's place in a charriot and ultorath is the festival where he comes back.
The next mag to hit the scene was called Cinema jagat, which means the world of cinema.
Apart from cinema related isuues and gossips these mags carried usual stuffs like short stories & serials.
Nabakallol came much later and made its mark by publishing serials and short stories which were in those days "fit for adults only"
There had been other similar mags but these three were the most popular.
