Yes there are touts in New Market and they are dedicated to foreign tourists. That's why Somnath may not mark them. They are undoubtedly very disturbing. They take commissions from the shop owners if they bring the tourists and make purchase. They are not at all official guides.Badges they used to show are nothing official.Noway to get rid of them only to ignore and tell the shopkeeper if you want to buy anything that this fellow is not with you.

That's a bane foreign tourists have to undergo and some may ask for. The coolies feel secure too as they may have union backing!

But for those who are informed about which shops to look for should refuse such help or if scene gets out of hand should cry help in extreme cases. The Cal public do not tolerate such nonsense and will take care of the perp. (only in extreme cases and not as a solution to get rid of the help without due tips)

Any newbe should visit the confectionaries inside New Market for some amazing chocolates and fudges.

I found these people very, very frustrating. I actually only ended up spending five minutes or so at the market, instead of the hour or two I'd planned, because I could not just wander around and buy things. I was pestered the whole time, and ended up just walking out of the place to escape.
