Moving to Calcutta

I may be moving to Calcutta in July for a few months, while my boyfriend is working there. Not the best time of year I know! What are the best places to visit from there? Day trips or whole weekends. I am a keen walker and like train rides. Towns, tea plantations, temples - all of interest to me.
Am I going to find Calcutta a huge shock?? I have been to Mumbai but no other cities in India.

Kolkata is a wonderful city and if you enjoyed Mumbai, you might like it better.

You can go to Santinekatan, Bishnupur (wonderful terra cotta temples), Puri (beach town just an overnight train away), Darjeeling (tea plantations, mountains)...

Or you can take a week and go to Bangladesh (different country; you need another visa), or to the Sunderbans (mangroves and maybe tigers)...

Or you can just walk around and explore Kolkata!

Darjeeling may not be the right option given the political turbulence there at present.
You may consider Murshidabad in the weekends. Taki for a night. Definitely Shantiniketan+Massanjore dam, Bankura+Bishnupur+Mukutmanipur , Sunderbans in the winter, Gopalpur-on-sea+Daringbari+Taptapani in Orissa.

you could try Digha or Mandarmoni if you are looking for a quick dose of the sea.
