I havent been to Bakkhali for more than 30 years. At that time, there was almost nothing available there at all. |

Hi Mahajan,
Sorry for delayed reply. The fact is I forgot my password and could not log on for a long time. Today IM had provided me with new pass word. Now Bakkhali is a very popular destination and everything is available. Lots of Hotel. But the good one is West Bengal Tourism’s. We always prefer to carry/buy mineral water but my son suddenly taken cold water from a tank there. Bakkhali is a beautiful place and one can really enjoy as it is not crowded yet. Beautiful expanded beach and thick forest behind. We did a nice trip by boat until the mouth of the river. Lots of other thing to see. One should keep a day for sight seeing. |

Hi fsg,
Sunderban is very nearer to Bakkhali. We started there by Bus from Esplanade bus stand. We booked the bus called "West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation" one of which starts at 7 am and one at 8 am everyday. This is the only bus which has vessel facility, means a vessel to cross the river at Namkhana. One can also go by car. Then again the bus will take you to Bakkhali. Why I recommended West Bengal Tourism because of its location. |

Also you can drive down to Bakkhali, Routes Kolkata -
Diamond Harbour - Namkhana - Car Ferry Over River - Bakkhali . On Average It Takes 3.5 Hours. Roads are Moderate to Poor in Monsoon. Roads are single Carriageway with Low to Moderate Traffic. Cheers |

Thanks SB
We visited Sunderban last Feb at Bali Island run by help tourism. Even tho I had printed out maps of the area and subsequently took pix of any map we met on our way, I was still confused by the routes we took. I always carry a compass, but with these expanses of water, its totally confusing as all is so flat. Here in UK I am used to hills etc, but there just Sundari trees , creeks and ...... well water, and of course tides higher than here. The only fault I could find in getting to Sonarkali was the noxious water we had to travel beside to get there............ however we all have the same body functions and its got to go somewhere to be treated. Any other suggestions for an interesting coastal place not too far from Calcutta , our plans are not fixed yet for 2009, bu twe love Clacutta so much hopefully we will get there Feb 09, escaping from the heat of the S |

Thanks fsg for your love of Kolkata (Calcutta). Sunder ban is on the east side of Bakkhali. Person like you, who want to stay in peace, will love to stay at Bakkhali. As we, “India Miker” is like-minded people I think you will love to stay there. You have probably seen the sights mentioned by Machadinha, to know more about the place. It’s very quite, with all facilities around. One can even go by train from Sealdah but it is very crowded. Bus has two facilities. Firstly, the wheels are big, less jerking; secondly, it can go upto Bakkhali without any break. Hope you will plan accordingly.
