Hi

I am planning about 5-6 weeks in Kolkata and will be volunteering. Can anyone suggest a good place to stay that is clean and comfortable (budget to mid range) but where other vollies may stay.

Also in dorms/shared rooms where there is a shared bathroom, generally how many people is it shared with??

Do they do twin shared rooms with adjoining bathroom?

Thanks!

Welcome

Hi Sarah,
Welcome to Kolkata.
I am sorry, I don’t know much about such facility but heard about Salvation Army Guest House 2, Sudder Street, Calcutta 700017 Ph 2450599. Not sure about the dorm / shared room. Please wait till someone gives you first hand info. But I think the organization where you are going to work, will provide you the best solution.

If you are volunteering for the Mother Theresa group, daughter says there is some kind of accomodation right near there that volunteers use. RK Mission is possible, but you have to reserve ahead, $3 per day. She was very down on sudder street in terms of the beggers, drug scene, low lives etc concentrating there because of the backpacker tourist scene. Judging by her experience, K is exceptionally intense at first arrival but she loves it there. Im sure you will find a guesthouse/homestay to make your time there enjoyable.

Geneliadsouza9,

Thanks for the information about Howrah Hotel, I've got few weeks ago the information from another side and the hotel look nice and of course is well situated and very useful for the RS.

Only one question: Why is so cheap compared with other hotels in Calcutta????

In any case have already booked on line for next November, hope everything will be as it seems to be.

All the best

Jorge

Jorge

The photos that are shown are of the higher range rooms, double beds. The single ones are not bad either.
I have seen the hotels and rooms on Sudder St. This one is much better. The rates are comparatively cheaper and are fixed round the year. They do not bargain. Each time I have stayed in the hotel, I have got the same rate, its just that after every two to three odd years they increase the rate marginally, as they say to keep up with the expenses. You get a single bedded room (without attach toilets) for 125/-, I say damn cheap, I felt so atleast, though I stayed with my husband in a double bedded room for INR.380/- which had CTV, western toilets, intercom facility, the rooms were amazingly big, what around 15 ft. x 15 ft. was the size of the room, though the structure is old, but the room had high ceilngs and it was spacious, comfortable beds.

It's 'way off from the tourist area and possibly caters to travelling salesmen, as do most hotels near rail stations. And remember, if you want to do anything in downtown Kolkata, you have to cross Howrah Bridge!

When I was staying there, I asked the same question to the Manager, and this is what he had to say : This hotel is the oldest hotel in Howrah, and the hotel runs with Goodwill, mouth of word.
The rate is fixed round the year and there is no high season and low season concept, as the hotel does not rely only on tourists per-se, there are a host of other category of people who stay there, like service class people, business men, yes, salesmen too, they have atleast 90 schools and colleges of different states of India registered with them, who come for educational tours almost every year,it iffers value for money, alot of dignataries have paid their visit there, etc etc....
Yes, one would have to cross the bridge, but if u are getting down the train at Howrah station or catching a train from there, it is walking distance.
Being the oldest - First hotel has its advantages, their costs are minimum and have broken - even (financial terms) long time ago, and have nothing to recover, as in Return on Investment (ROI), whatever they are offering is at cost to cost, the actual bebeficiary are the visitors.
What else.......................... ...........

Most probably all the things you say about the hotel and the owners are true, but it seems they are not very fast replying. Have sent a reservation form via their web page seven days ago and have not yet received any answer.

hi sarah
near sudder, i thought pioneer guesthouse was well kept, clean bathrooms etc. it was about 300 rupees, a little more expensive thant the budget places down there but also cleaner, and it is on a relatively quiet street. i cant remember the street name, but it is the next parallel street south of sudder
