Thumbs up Welcome

Hi Roberto,
Welcome to IndiaMike.

Jadavpur university is a very good university – there is no doubt about it. And I am not sure if hostel can be arranged online. That’s not much popular here. You can refer to this website to get some idea of PG accommodation (Saltlake is away from Jadavpur so not very helpful…. Still you’ll get some idea):
http://www.clicksaltlake.info/record...99148badb0ab87

- I think you can write mail to the university to know something regarding this University hostel facility.

Cheers.

Hello Lozissou,

I hope u have got lot of information regarding the cost of living in Kolkata. The basic consideration is your standard of living.
Students in India, usually live a very simple life.
4800+3000=7800 may be an okay option for an Idian student keeping in mind that they won't have to spend towards Airfare like you. The amount you have specified, you can somehow manage to live here with that sacrificing habits like eating out in good restaurents or shopping frequently, travelling luxuriously(by taxi). You have to depend on public transport. Best accommodation option would be Private Hostel/Paying guest at that amount.
otherwise Kolkata is a Lively city...if you come here finally, you may be enjoying your stay .

Thanks for all these informations. I will be looking for some PGs or hostels, and surfing for more informations. I am not pretentious and I don't mind to have a minimum cost way of life, as Indians do. I'd just wish to have something decent (again: clean, big enough for myself and my stuff, hopefully well connected and I assume this is not so regular...) where I can live and study for the next three years. I won't have the chance to be there previously and check the accomodation out, so I guess I shall arrange this by myself or thanks to the University as well (not speaking about people like you, especially if so helpful).

Will PGs accept a so long-term stay?
Would you have some contact numbers to call if they don't usually have a website or sort of?

Thanks again.

PGs should not have a problem with long term stay.

Anyway..... if you find the PG owner is reluctant to have you for more than a year or so, you can always shift to another PG.

I would strongly advise not to choose your accomodation without seeing it first.

Land up in kolkata in a budget guest house, start your work, take info/feedback from other students/professors, see a few places nearby and then shift.

The whole process may take 2-3 weeks.

No decent house owner will agree to accept you as a PG without having a look at you first (after all you will be living with his family for a long time).

Hi Roberto,
I might be able to introduce you to someone who's looking to rent out a room to students. The apartment is quite close to the university - a 10 to 15mins walk - and conforms to your requirements.
If you are interested, mail me @ kapitanmoody[at]gmail[dot]com for further details.
And, er... please reply fast, because someone else is also interested about this place, but hasn't given a final word.

Note to mods: This is a disposable mail ID...

Roberto:

Most of the answers suggest that you would be able to survive satisfactorily on the grant that has been offered to you, and that may well be true.

However, these may be based on Indian standards for a satisfactory student lifestyle.

As a European you may find the lifestyle of an Indian student to be absolutely unbearable, and you may have a horrendous 3 years ahead of you. In particular, I suspect the living conditions could be far below your lowest expectations.

I would suggest doing some serious research before taking the placement, and making sure the people you ask understand your expectations.

Though it is true that Indian students do not require to work part time in the restaurant or baby sitting to maintain the standard like so called European student but their living standard are certainly not horrendous because the things they require are cheap, avaialble and easily accesible.Since you are ready for the course and has prepared your mind to study in India ,avoid taking snobbish medicine and go ticking.

I think it was made pretty clear in the responses to OPs post that he will have to live a very frugal life.
No restaurant meals, no alcohol, very little travel, no new clothes etc etc.

he will have to have his meals at the university canteen or home delivered lunch/dinner packs and travel by public transport (bus or shared auto rickshaw).

Basic food, groceries, public transport and toilettries are extremely cheap in India.

But its certainly not an "unbearable" life for one whose focus will be on his research.

I tend to agree with ExpatUK to the extent that the OP's expectations of lifestyle may be absolutely different from an Indian student's, and it is wise to be clear on that.

The 'As a European' bit I disagree with as a generalisation. Everything depends on the individual. For example, some Indians would not be able to travel on a budgeted thousand rupees a day in India; some Europeans do.

With the sudden spurt of Call Centres job in Kolkata,
Paying guest accommodation has become more expensive
then ever before. for example in Jadavpur / Santoshpur
area you could be paying 2000 for a Dorm type paying guest
accommodation sharing with 3/4 students without food.
Single bed paying guest in South suberbs will cost atleast
4000-5000 rupees per month.

Cheers

Jadavpur University is a great one to go through the hardship. Once settled, scout for opportunities to teach Language (Italian) and work as an interpreter.
This could generate some extra income.
