Most people in Kolkata speak bengali and many of them can speak/understand hindi to a certain extent. You can get by in day to day life with either of the two.

...and almost everyone who is wearing clean clothes will speak English, although they may have trouble with your accent and you with theirs.

It depends a lot on who you are interacting with. Most people in shopping malls, offices, restaurants, etc will be able to communicate in english (of course, with a few 'Excuse Me's).

You might have some trouble with people on the road - local shopkeepers, cab/auto drivers and so. The local and prevalant language is Bengali but Hindi is understood by most.

Hello,

So been in Kol a week now, Can get by with-out speaking Bengali or Hindu but it would be much easier if i knew some!!

Does anyone have a quick word or phrase translation guide? If the response is 'No' maybe we should make one up, Im sure there will be enough ppl on forum to contribute

the bengali language has no gender - it dont even have a 'he' or a 'she' [i can see nayan peering over my shoulder here!]
bengalees translate bengali into hindi.
hence their 'version' of 'hindi' is something you will never hear anywhere else in india.

my suggestion is - stick to english, use words instead of phrases...
for example: you go park street? where park street?
however, dont be surprised if you're answered in perfect english!
