Kricket in Kolkata

Hi, this is my first post but I've been reading and referring to Indiamike for some time now. The forums, especially the hotel reviews, have proved extremely useful on this, my first visit to India.

In six weeks I plan to be in Kolkata, and for the last month I've been searching for a website or some resource that would kindly inform me of the January cricket fixtures at Eden Gardens. The labyrinthine monstrosity of cricket internet information has, however, failed to yield anything remotely useful. Even the BBC didn't see fit to publish international fixtures beyond the end of December. Does anyone know of a dedicated website for Eden Gardens or the Calcutta Cricket Club? Are only international matches played at Eden Gardens, or are there league and local fixtures as well? Kolkata is my departure point, and seeing an Indian cricket match would be the perfect way to round off my trip.

Apparently, you haven't visited http://www.cricinfo.com, the most comprehensive website on cricket.

Dec. 31 to Jan 3 - Bengal vs Delhi Elite Group Ranji trophy match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Ah, I see now. Thankyou. I did come across cricinfo, but threw it down in frustration when looking up Eden Gardens in the Grounds section failed to elicit a link or fixtures list. Far too impatient.

Is it true that a sound knowledge of the batting averages of all the Indian batsmen is a sure way to talk your way out many a sticky moment on the subcontinent?

Does anyone have any interesting first hand experiences of a cricket match in India? I have heard that it is quite exhilerating (if you like cricket that is). Far more interesting than watching a match in Australia anyway.

I'm especially keen to go to Eden Gardens as well Leatherboy, around the same time you will be there. I think England is due to play a one day match there in Jan. Maybe I can sing along with the balmy army if they go to India.

Maybe safer to barrack with the locals on this one!

Yes, a fair cricketing knowledge and the willingness to acknowledge Sachin's genius will have the Indians eating out of your hand !!

Watch any cricket match at the Wankhede stadium, Mumbai, from the North stand. You'll be surprised to learn how knowledgable the average cricket fan is!!

I went to Eden Gardens to try to get a guide book to the cricket ground for a friend, I asked at the security office where I could get a guide book, I was told to follow a man, so I did.

He took me inside the ground and around the cricket pitch, up into the stands and we just sat there, then a few more places then away from the pitch.

He then pointed me to the way out of the ground and he just walked back into the security office.

I guess they thought that I wanted a guide to show me around the stadium.

It's a pitty I never took any photos, but I'd already learnt that nobody seems to like you taking photos in Calcutta. (security reasons)
