kolkata
Well, here I am in Kolkata. Had planned on trying to get a train out straight away and spending time here on my way back. But there was a f**k-up with my return ticket which I only found out about last night (bloody Bangkok travel agent!) and I had to sort it out here at Indian Airlines. Just round the corner from the Broadway Hotel (must be pretty bloody far off-Broadway though)... noisy as the room is right over a main road and we all know how much the Indian driver likes to play with his horn. Big room though with new bathroom. And I just had my first masala dosa since I left Auckland in August... yummo.
Anyway, my question is... apart from the stuff listed in the Lonely Planet to see here, are there any other places I should visit if I can't get a train out tomorrow night? I'd planned on spending time here at the end of my trip but now that I'm here I could just as easily see the sights now. Plus, any tips for a quieter hotel if I do stay? From what I saw on the way in from the airport, it looks like a pretty cool city. Namaste from India ![]() |

Check out the subway so you can tell the Delhi-ites all about it when you get there. Go to College St and look at the book stalls, work out how to get to Howrah from Sudder St for Rs5 in 40 minutes, have a ride in a proper rickshaw, see Mr Singh in his taxi outside the Fairlawn and say hello from me. Don't bother with the museum but the market is great...
There is lots to do in Kolkata |

Thanks, Colin... I'll check out those things when I get back. A funny thing happened while I was queuing at the railway ticket office. I had Gaya written down as my destination...but just before I got to the desk I crossed it out and wrote Delhi. So here I am.

Um... I've written down the address and I'll see if I can fit it in between other less important things like the Red Fort and shopping (I just bought a lime squeezer which I'm pretty excited about.... have been looking in Bangkok but no luck and I need one for Margaritas).
