Man dada you have opened up a can of worms . But you did miss out on "chur mur "made by the puchkavalas of areas south of Ballygunge(somehow the areas on either side were different); Another experience! I do not know Jyotirmoyda if you had visited a shop called "Chat Ghar" in Jodhpurpark making Chana Bhatura and Alu Dam in the 70's ;this belonged to my very own maternal grandmother !

My experience with Mughlai Parathas too started with Cal though now I am in the South!

Also incedentely I am having Mishti Doi from Sree Durga Sweets (one of the only in Chennai) as I read this!
Bhai Gametotravel,
My teritory was north & central so I was not aware of the places you mentioned.

Fools rush in where angels ....

> 1. Ohh...aaj aar bolben naa!

Literal translation for laughs (LTFL):
Oh ...today, please don't say.

Very rough approximation of meaning (VRAOM):
What a day!

> 2. Chol...ektaa biri phunke aashi!
VRAOM: Let's go have a smoke.

> 3. Thak thak dada o shob jana ache.

LTFL: Stay stay older brother, all that is known.

VRAOM: <this one is impossible ... tone is critical>
Don't! I/we get it! <said belligerantly or sceptically>
______________________________ _____________________________
Questions of myself: why am I doing this? who is this really for? what does it say about my life that I am doing this of my own free will? Since Bengalis already know what these quintessentially Bangla phrases mean, I just don't see non-Bengali students of Bangla slipping some of these 'lines' in casually as they practice conjugation.

Note 1 for the imaginary student of Bangla: don't try these phrases randomly without an understanding of how age, relationship, social class and context affect the Bangla language - especially, the many forms of 'you' - tui, tumi, apni.

Note 2: the term 'dada' which is used by brothers and sisters to refer to their older brothers may be freely used in public to address male strangers (who appear to look older) - 'didi' in the case of women.

Note 3: it is hard to say when dada becomes dadu - since we're somewhat of a 'lookist' culture, don't be surprised if a few wrinkles or a shiny bald pate trigger the 'dadu' greeting.

Returning to my academic exercise.
______________________________ ______________________________

> 4. Minibus-e aajkey jaa ek piece dekhlaam naa!
LTFL: I saw this piece in the minibus today!
VRAOM: <Replace 'piece' with 'hot chick' in above sentence.>

> 5. Khokaaa...duto chhoto chaa...aamaar tabil-e.

VRAOM: Here! <snapping your fingers ... I recommend we refrain from hailing khoka this way from now on> Two small cups of tea at this table.

______________________________ ______________________________ ____
Looking at the next one (and the dozen or so gems below it) I feel a little tired already. These are truly priceless. Time to take a nap. Gotta remain true to my roots. I leave the rest to worthier Bangalis.

What a tour de force!

Thank you for the English translations. I was beginning to feel a bit left out and dumb (and slightly concerned that I'm reading outrageously filthy comments without knowing...). I think your system of literal and intended meanings works really well and should be adopted as best practice from now on!
