Kolkata Khaos

Am writing this marooned in Kolkata.
Train services have been disrupted here - pieces of the track are damaged from the recent rain.
No clue from the Great Indian Railways when services are likely to get back on track either.
Flights out are ridiculously expensive - domestic airlines certainly know when they're on a winner!

More about the recent floods in East India from BBC here.

How about the highways? Are the buses moving?

I am staying in Kolkata. In kolkata there in no flood but in the inner areas of West bengal like Midnapore is flooded & because of which many railway tracks & bridges got damaged. I was about to post a question regarding it.

My friend who went to Puri last week got stuck there as all the east line railways are cancelled. Flights are so expensive & don't know about the bus service. She is asking me for advice but don't know how to help her. Can anyone in IMERs give some advice?

HI Somnath,

She & her family safely returned on Saturday. Luckily, Puri Howrah Express on friday left Puri around 8.00PM & arrived in Howrah around 7.00 PM on saturday. She said that the train has to take a long route from tatanagar.

I am thankful to GOD that she safely arrived.

I know lots of train are canceled till 30th June 2008 as per news. Even the special bus which the government has arranged to take 1000 tourist from Puri also got stucked in Orissa Jungle. Its so dangerous... anything can happen in roads.

SE Railways cancels train services due to Midnapore floods

Lets see when things become normal in this route.

That’s good news, Ann.
But just came to know from another colleague that his wife is there in Bhubaneswar with team and looking for an option to reserve a bus to come down to Kolkata.
BTW, it is really a good move by West Bengal Govt. to rescue people from Orissa.
