Kolkata hotel rates
Hello,
I'm planning a long stay (2-6 weeks) in Kolkata this July-August. I've never been before and know next to nothing about prices in the city or the country. My usual plan in this situation is the old soft-cheap double-play: get a room in a mid-range hotel for the first night or two to make a soft landing, then find a cheap place in a decent area and settle in for the long stay. But I have only a poor idea what the soft, and no idea what the cheap, will cost. I'm hoping I can find help here about room rates in mid-range and budget lodgings. By budget I mean local budget - as long as there are no rats and the place is clean I'm fine. Amazingly, it's impossible to get room rate information on the internet. It's like a huge community of merchants every one of whom is afraid they'll lose a few pennies if they reveal some basic info. Anyway, if you can help me then I will be ever so thankful, He Wen |

Welcome to indiamike
![]() Have you browsed the hotel section here, as well as the Kolkata forum? Do search. Will post here if I find any threads. PS If you go to search (top right on this page), then advanced search, enter in the advanced search keywords box kolkata hotel and select 'search titles only' (from the drop down just below the keywords) 19 threads show up in the search, some look promising. Ok, 18, the first one is yours ![]()

Gotcha - thanks.
I did search but clearly have a lot to learn about searching. Thanks for the welcome too. By the way, and in the way of cheers, here are a couple of old books you can get from google books on Calcutta and India. Might not be your thing, but thought I'd share. http://books.google.com/books?id=eOk...rSjgHpzsGu AQ http://books.google.com/books?id=lfM...W2iQHMw_yq AQ All the best, He Wen |

You will find some reasonable price hotels at Sudder Street (within range Rs. 300-600) . I can remember a name : Capital guest house. Please try this hotel.

Suddar Street is your best bet. Hotels range from Rs 300 to Rs 2000.... best is to get a tout they will show you around in most of the hotels and they get their commisions from hotels so you dont need to worry. See the room yourself before checking in.
