Hey there
,Next year I will go to Kolkata for my internship for about six months (I am environmental management student). Therefor I am willing to rent an apartment most preferably in southern-Kolkata. But I am a bit concerned about swindlers and rip-offs. Especially foreigners are an easy target. What is the best way for me as a Dutch foreigner to approach this problem? And where do I have to start looking (will there be rental-house agencies around)? Where do have to pay extra attention on when renting in Kolkata? Have you heard stories about rip-offs (for instance not paying back a safety deposit)? Last question: what should I expect to pay for a 2-bedroomed apartment? Thanks, Wouter |

ask locally
It seems like the people you're interning with should have some ideas. You're wise to be concerned about getting ripped off, but the fact that you're going to be perceived to be a wealthy foreigner (whether true or not) will likely result in you being overcharged for the apartment. I don't know what they cost in Kolkata, but again, your local contacts ought to be able to help with this.

hey chapati,
rather than ripped off u may get eaten in india (as chapati is favourite hand made bread here)...!!! anyway coming to the point, take help of your training agency or institute. they will arrange suitable shelter for u. there is huge chance to get cheated by rent agencies or brokers. after u staying here for some months, getting some acquaintances u can move to place of ur choice. kolkata is very cheap in western standerds, rent for a 2-3 room flat may be around Rs4000/- per month, food and beverages will cost on an average Rs125/- per day. best of luck, take care.

Hi,
Best thing is to take help from your Institute. Ask them to provide / arrange accomodation for you. There are lot / tons of real estate agents / brokers in the city who can arrange flat for you. But it will be a bit problem for getting rented flat for 6 months. Can think for Paying Guest option ( just an advice ) , separate furnished room with attached toilet & other facilitiies. Just log on to this site, you will have an idea of the rates about the rent of the city . http://www.yourssweethome.com/
