Khadi cotton + silk
Can someone please help by telling me the location of traditional style Indian clothes sellers like kurtas, vesties, waistcoats trousers ,made from handloom cottons and/ or silk in Kolkata.
I should also like to locate natural fabric sarees and shalwar kamiz for the wife. I thankyou in advance, Martinez. |

Some cities have Gandhi ashram shops that sell khadi clothing. Have bought from these shops in both Delhi and Panjim. Kadhi seems to have a looser weave than machine made fabrics, perhaps it's this that makes it so comfortable in the heat.

I would suggest FabIndia...this boutique specializes in khadi clothing for men, women and children....the clothing is well made and available at a good price...they also carry some beautiful silk items...and although this may not really matter - this is where every woman I know does their kurta shopping
(I don't know that many women but you get what I mean )www.fabindia.com Kolkata Hindustan Park 16, Hindustan Park, Kolkata - 700029 Ph: +91-33-24656954, +91-33-24656955 Email:calcutta@fabindia.com Store Timings: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm; Mondays closed |

A number of my birthday presents from Mrs N this year came from Fab India --- and very smart Kurtas they are too; I'm delighted
![]() But this is fashion stuff: compared with the government Khadi shops they are expensive, and you need to check out the quality, I stopped buying from them for a couple of years because I had some badly stitched stuff. They do extremely good-looking clothes for both men and women in cotton and silk. Be aware that the silk seems to be "dry clean only" (which adds too much to 'cost-of-ownership' for me) and the cottons, being mostly natural-dye colours, run like crazy in the wash, and must gentle-hand washed individually the first quite-a-few times

Fab India seems to be the rage these days. But, found the prices to be atleast double street prices. But, ofcourse their air conditioned boutiques make for much more pleasant shopping experience when compared to haggling on the streets. Persoanlly I prefer shopping in the gullies, especially for traditional Indian stuff.

Sometimes I get tired of bargaining. I haven't explored a FabIndia but think I may next time.
I went to the their web-site and checked prices as if I were buying the item in India - I assume the web prices are for having the item sent from India to India. Does anyone know if the web prices about the same [in Rs] as in their stores? Do you know if the prices are the same for the same item in all of their stores? distaff half of hfot2 |

No, the web prices are way higher than the prices in the stores - at least double from what I can see.
For example: Kurtas which cost about 250 - 280 rupees in the shop are $19.95 US on their website, for example. |

I looked at the prices on the web in rupees not dollars. They were way cheaper in rupees than the exchange into dollars would be.

OK, for me it doesn't matter on the website if I say I want to buy within India or overseas - the prices are all in US$. I don't seem to be able to change the currency.
PS - Funnily enough I just looked at it again and this time it was in rupees! So, the sort of kurta I paid 250Rps for last December at the store in Connaught Place, is 336Rps on the website. But for the men's wear there seems to be less difference - what we bought for 280Rps is 312Rps on the website. That could just be inflation in the last 9 months I guess. |

FabIndia is not a traditional clothes shop: it is a fashion shop, with prices to match.
But I'd recommend it as a stop as the clothes buyer's list: their stuff is very nice ![]() |

clothing
I lived in Dehli in the 1970s and always bought my clothes in the khadi bhavan on a corner site in connaught place/circus.
These clothes were always basic and very good, plus the fact that they were/are supporting a sustainable industry ie:- the hand loom and local cotton/silk,this type of principle is really what i am looking for in a clothing outlet in Kolkata. On my arrival in kolkata i shall have only 48 hours to do all the things i need before departing for Port Blair,so actually haggling in the market places is not really an option i wish to devote much time to. Plus, i feel greedy if i hussle too much for better prices. In Mumbai last year i located a khadi shop on DN Road,it sold rural crafts too,i think it was a government of India iniciative and most if not all the clothing was hand loom khadi. It there something like this in Kolkata,??? PS. thankyou all for your replies. Martinez |

My suggestion will be to go to FabIndia if you are interested in readymade items like kurta etc. The prices will be not too different from the govt khadi emporium..... and style... stock etc will be wayyyy better....
Theres a FabIndia outlet in Citycentre Mall in Saltlake too. If you want material then you are better off visiting any of the below outlets : Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan 24, Chittaranjan Avenue, Kolkata - 700 012 Bengal Home Industries Association 11Abanindra Thakur Sarani Park Circus Kolkata - 700 017 Tel: 2282-1562 Manjusha 8/2 Jagamohan Mullick Lane, Barabazar. Kolkata-700 007 Tel: 2271-2213 the dakshinapan shopping centre near dhakuria bridge will also have some state emporiums which will stock all kinds od handloom products. |
