Hi,

I am new in this forum and new to Kolkata as well. I have posted a thread earlier [asking for some information about Gariya ]and got a few feedback which was really helpful .

Anyway, I have some more queries. Please try to answer these :

1. Is Kolkata a safe city for women at night if we hire a taxi ?

2. Are the taxi/cab drivers trustworthy ?

3. How safe it is for a woman to return home at night alone in a cab ?

thanks

Lightbulb

if you travel after 11 pm then call kolkata cab 44 222 222. Charges are slightly higher and they pick you up from door step.

And place too. But if you follow general precautions just like any other place.... you'll find Kolkata is a nice place

There was a time some decades back when a man on the street late at night was safe only if escorted by a woman. Those were naxal days. I am sure some of that effect still continues.
Alone I walked. Strangers joined in. We became a caravan.

That is a ridiculous statement....not to mention the tenuous link attempted to be drawn between the naxalite movement and women.

My sister in law says the family considers the city to be the safest for women. When did Charu Mazumdar play that out, 1971.?

Ridiculous statement, Yes. Incorrect statement, perhaps No.

I remember having to return to my parents to the rest house at midnight, 500meters from a friend's home in 1976(I was 15 years old). The friend's sister, 5years my senior, was sent as escort for safety. She returned alone.

I have always felt exceptionally safe in Kolkata, though I do not do stupid things, like walk in strange areas at night, or walk alone through the Maidan or any other park.

Just because you are in India doesn't mean you don't need your "street smarts," newbie123.

As she had to walk back alone, to me that does not sound like a demonstration of how dangerous the streets are for men or women, it sounds like your friends family was being very protective of their young guest, as you would expect.

No place in the world is entirely safe. Kolkatans can be obsessive about safety for women and foreigners, and will vigorously discourage you from taking taxis alone at night. It's probably not a good idea outside well-trafficked areas, in other words the Gariahat area is OK but Garia, no.

But Kolkata is safer than other big cities in India, and certainly much safer than any city of any size (any city large enough to have taxis) in the USA.

Certainly it gets even safer when you know what you are doing, dress appropriately, speak some Bengali, and carry yourself confidently.

I would also say that it depends on whether or not you are white/caucasian. Most of my female caucasian friends have experienced groping and some taunting/teasing. And they were dressed modestly in local attire. If you look more east or south asian, it is not as much as problem. Regardless, I would not be out past nine alone as a woman here.

I agree on the being out alone part esp after 9 or 10 p.m. It gets dark pretty early in Cal in winter, so really other than coming home from work or something like that, I wouldn't be out gallivanting. As long as you're w/ one other person though, it should be ok.

In all my travels, I have always felt the safest in Kolkata . This includes all non-Indian cities as well, there's just something v. comforting about that city. I'm talking just about the safety aspect.

I've experienced some "eve-teasing" in quite a few Indian cities and towns but not in Kolkata. Yeah sure the usual shouting out asking my name, where I'm from etc but it's all harmless, I've never been touched or really even whistled at there. I sure appreciate that v. much

3 am
single woman
plenty of auto's available without having to phone in for one
no extra charge except a nominal 10% over and above the meter
get home in a straight route - no roundabouts

college girls travel by local train at wee hours of the night - and reach home without fear.

thats bombay.
of course there're the one off incidents -
no city comes even close to bombay to feeling 'safe'.

guess - calcutta could come a second
but the city aint what it used to be, unfortunately.
call in for a cab -
