Hotel Recommendation - 2,000 R / Day?

Hi All,

My first post here. I wondered if anyone could help me in recommending a decent hotel in the centre of Kolcata? I'm flying there tomorrow.

I've seen a few threads of this topic but they're all for dirt cheap places or really expensive ones! I've ruled out the Firlawn due to bad reviews but are there any other decent ones for about 2000 R per night?

I was staying in a DUMP in Mumbai last week until I read about the Residency Hotel (fort)on this site because somebody had recommended it. I stayed there and thought it was great.

Thanks All
Stoke.

As many have previously noted here, Kolkata has an absense a quality mid-ranged hotels but some do exist. For the 2000rs price range try these perhaps:

The Best Inn
1b sushil sen road, (off chowringhee road & elgin rd. Crossing) , Kolkata 700025, India

Bodhi Tree Guesthouse
48/44 swiss park , Kolkata 700033, India

Sunflower Guest House
7 royd st, Chowringhee , Kolkata
Telephone 033 2229 9401

Many thanks for your help.

I went to Best Inn but they were full for several days, so I took the taxi driver's advice to stay at a hotel in or near Park Street and I ended up at the Hotel VIP (not the VIP InterContintal, which is on the same street) just off Park Street.

1880 inc tax for a standard room. I have been there for two nights and thought it was pretty OK until this morning when I was half awake in bed and noticed a movement out of the corner of my eye. I got out of bed and lifted up the topcover, which I had left in a heap on the other side of the double bed I was sleeping alone in. A Cockroach ran for cover at the speed of light and I jumped away from the bed! Dammit, those things can shift!

Reception has moved me to another room, but I'll check out after today and I'll look to find something else in Park Street!

By taking the taxi driver's advice you're risking the chance of his recommendation being made merely on his receiving a commission from the hotel. Try the other two options I mentioned; I believe the Sunflower Guesthouse is in the same neighborhood....I will be in Kolkata in two weeks myself so I'll be able to give more direct recommendations after that
