Hotel Near Kolkata Airport?

Hi all,

I really did try to search for a thread on this. I am sure I have seen in in the past when I was more active on the site...but I couldn't find it - sorry!

Can anyone recommend a moderate priced hotel in Kolkata near the airport? Also, any tips for prepaying taxi's to get from airport to hotel. My husband is there now and all of his family are too leary about safety to bring him to airport for 5:00 AM flight. So, they are planning to bring him at 9:00 PM day before!

I have convinced him to stay at a hotel and start his journey off rested.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Many thanks,
Rachelle

Hi there,

I had a similar flight last year. I looked for a hotel near the airport (admittedly not too thoroughly) and didn't come across much, so I booked a place in central Kolkata and took a taxi to the airport around 10pm. I spent the ensuing several hours reading and chatting on the phone and didn't encounter any problems at all. Actually it was nice because staying up let me sleep on the plane even with an extremely disruptive child in the seat ahead of me! I would have been much more exhausted if I had slept until, say, 2:30am and went to the airport at 3.

Thumbs up Hi

Hey Rachelle,
How is life at Krishnanagar? Ha ha…..

Anyways, there are some hotels near airport and MBD is a good suggestion (well, I don’t think it is ‘moderate’ but yes, location is just great). I was just recommending
Rupasee Bangla,
Heritage
Host International

Apart from these there are some small lodges. Like Airview / Airways / Oasis. Let me find a link……

You are rite, that thread is deleted !!!! but one such thread is here: Budget hotel in Kolkata

Thank you!

Thank you all for responding!

Somnath, How are you? Thanks for your reply! It's been a long time! I haven't been to Krishnaghar since last April. My husband is there now. My Bengali friends who are from Kolkata look at me funny when I tell them how much I love Krishnaghar (reminder: I am American), but I really do! So, I wonder if you are making fun of me too!?!

Unfortunately, these nice recommendations are going to go to waste because in all indian style, my husband "proposed" the idea of going to a hotel early but his sisters/brothers would hear nothing of it. Must eat with them first and then sit in airport for several hours prior to the necessary 2 hours before flight. I am told that to go to a hotel would be insulting. These situations remind me of how some of my western ways are very hard wired!

I miss this site a lot...I need to make more time to log on!

My apologies for posting this in wrong forum!

And please manage some free time to come to this site. I can assure you that no one from Krishnanagar will stop you.

I tried to find some info about the MBD hotel, no luck. Didn't see them listed here on IM in the hotel section or in my Footprint guide.

My Mom's flight gets to the airport at 10PM. Assuming it takes 1-1.5 hours to get out of the airport after customs, baggage claim, etc.; how long do y'all think it would take to get to the Sudder St. area? 30 minutes?

I'm also wondering that -- and hoping that I can find someone to share a prepaid taxi to Sudder Street when I arrive in October. I arrive at 11pm and told the hotel it would probably be 1am by the time I get there.

Where's your mother going to stay on Sudder Street?

I do travel frequently thru NSCBI Airport , Calcutta
at Different times , sometime as early as morning
3'o clock , now a days abosolutely no problem ,since
Airport Traffic is busy throughout the night and
all Departure/Arrival of Lufthansa , Thai, Singapore , BA ,
are between midnight and early morning .

At 10 P.M. Airport arrival absolutely no problem, if he/she is
holding a Non-Indian passport , its much faster , there is two
separate immigration counter dealing only with foreigners ,
Only time it takes to arrive your luggage onto carousel (though
it much faster than London Heathrow, I have an experience to
wait for 45 minutes at Heathrow for Luggage ).Customs dont bother
you if you are not bringing in any heavyduty items since your
baggage is already custom screen thoroughed prior arrival to carousel.

There are plenty prepaid taxi , after you come out from arrival,
look on left side of your alleyway , there is a Taxi counter by
"Bengal taxi association" , who are the providers for Prepaid taxi.
sudder street will take about 30-40 minutes during night hours.
but the most important suggestions is dont take "Rajarhat Expressway"
during the night time , instead ask taxi driver to take straight route
through Laketown-Ultadanga .

For all of your informations, MBD Hotel(formely Airport ashok )
is being renovated and out of service for last couple of Months.

Cheers
