I stayed (a couple of times) at the Diplomat, which is a block or so up the street from Fairlawn. I think it was about Rs600 with private bath. No hot water at the time, a year ago. Mr. Walia, the manager, is a nice young man.

You can write them at jwalia@yahoo.com

good budget hotel in Calcutta

I stayed at the "Hotel Rushabh Home" on Middleton Street (6A, I believe -- off-street entrance, but there is a sign on the front of the building, and Reception is on the 5th floor -- with elevator!). It has good security, with a very friendly and helpful staff.

It is located a little south of the Park Street area (short walking distance), and I found it quite nice for the price. I opted for one of the five little "cottages" on the roof (the 9th floor), which were only Rs900 per night for a clean single, with private bath (western), hot water, a/c, color tv, desk, comfy bed, and good room service. (The doubles were Rs1100.)

There is a lift up to the 6th floor, and then 3 short flights of broad stairs, with landings, to the roof. There is an open courtyard between the two facing groups of cottages, with potted plants around the perimeter, and great views of the city in 3 directions.
