Holi Festival in Kolkata

Hi

Am landing in Kolkata early hours on Good Friday.
Didn't realise when I booked up, but Sat 22 is Holi. What are the implications of this?

In theory it should be a great day out, but I've read too many worrying reports about drunk crowds. What's likely to happen?

I'm into photography so would really like to get some good images of it, but not if it means my camera gets wrecked!

On the other hand, sitting the day out indoors while it passes over sounds quite awful too.

Can you help?

Many thanks

Paul

Hi,

On the day of Holi or Dol(in Bengali) , morning hours
you wont be able to find much vehicle on the Road,
usually everything starts moving after 1400 hrs.
if you arrive BA flights early in the morning
you should be able to go your hotel or whatever
place you like. try to book Prepaid taxi from
inside Airport Counter this is just after clearing
your custom on your left hand side of the lobby
towards exit.

Bye

Holi will be celebrated in Kolkata on Fri 21st. So if you could start your journey from the airport by 8 in the morning then its ok otherwise you may not get cabs. you will get it only after 2 as cheif has said.

Here in Kolkata, Holi is celebrated two days. Bengali celebrate it on 21st March, and we marwari celebrate Holika dahan & on Saturday, 22nd March, we play Holi.

Regarding the taxi service in Holi, you will get taxi before 8 AM on 21st March as said by other members & on 22nd March, you wont be facing a large problem with taxi as everything will be available.

Regarding the Holi, I don't think so, you will be facing a huge problem as now a days people play holi very safely and that too with known people. But still be careful

I do not know why you are calling them Idiots !

Definitely somebody will fill lonely and outcast
if He/She are out in the street in the day of
"Holi" and nobody sprays color water or
"abir" on Him/Her.

Have you been to Thailand during Sankran
festival its same out there.

Believe me India is truly colorful , not
dull black and white like U.S.A or europe.

Chers Enjoy Holi.

Thumbs up

Hmmm…..
Is there any rule that you cannot spray color to someone you don’t know? I can remember we used to expand our horizon during this unparallel festival ! We used to get chance to turn the known face to new friends – alibi : Holi hai (+ a bang of color filled ballon ). Ha ha ha…..

But yes, may be the time has changed…… there are some groups in some areas (may be 1 or 2 guys in every locality) those try to take some undue advantage of this festival. And this is a bittier truth.

Now correct me if I am wrong (may be biased – hometown after all !!!! he he…) do you really think the situation in Kolkata is that worse? I am not sure….. my personal experience is just similar to Jyoti da and Ann.

- Hey paul, don’t worry. I don’t know about your plan or the area you are planning to be during Holi but please watch the group carefully (basic thing applicable for any part in this world) the trend and ….. and….. Hoili Hai.

- Cheers.

yes, holi is a time of joy. i cannot deny that.

yet you are forcing those colors on others spoiling their clothings.

same token diwali is a day of lighting, would you like others
throw crackers or chocolate bombs on you ?

no wonder the open bitterness never ends in your part of the world

I'm not sure that you could reasonably extrapolate that this part of the world is filled with "open biterness" due to fire crackers or coloured water being thrown at strangers. Likewise - I'm pretty sure school shootings have no bearing on the original question posed by the op. Might be a good time to get back on topic perhaps?

all i am saying is you happen to pass thru a locality with native
and you are not their kind and they throw coloured water on you,
and you do not like the way they treat you.

i have made myself clear. I know the majority of calcutta people i know
has the best behaviour and represent the best of the human kind.

Paul585, if you're in Kolkata on Holi, wear old clothing that you can discard if the colors won't come out.

The first group you run into may ASK if they can put color on you, but once you've got it, you are fair game for anybody who comes along!
