Has anyone heard of SANLAAP?
Namaste IndiaMike users,
I was wondering if anyone has volunteered with or heard of an NGO called SANLAAP that began in Kolkata? It is an organization that works with women and girls who have been involved in prostitution and it's aim is to slowly re-integrate them into society through education, counselling, skills training, and mental and physical health care. The website's 'Volunteer Page' is down so I'm unable to access info straight from SANLAAP - So I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me an insight....?? Dhanyavaad! Peace ![]() |

Hi there. Yes, I've heard of Sanlaap. I know of it through a friend. It's a very good NGO. Are you looking to volunteer there?
The intern/volunteer programs are well structured and I think they are selective about their volunteers. Why don't you contact them directly from the 'contact us' page? Hope this helps. |

Hi..
Yes I have tried a few times to contact them and I'm yet to receive a response, it's only been a week though.. perhaps I am being too impatient.. I am just so keen to hear off them! Yes, I am thinking of volunteering there, or perhaps after finishing my degree doing an internship.. Having read their website through and through their programs for rehabilitation seem quite comprehensive and well structured... good to hear that someone has some sort of positive knowledge about SANLAAP.. you never know about volunteer organisations from the internet - firstly, if they're real or not, secondly, if they are merely a commodity -a purchasable 'this will look good on my resume' package to help relieve Western guilt by 'saving the down-trodden', and thirdly, if volunteers actually DO ANYTHING to truly assist.. Thanks for the reply. I shall keep on waiting I think. If you have any more details about the programme or your friends experience I would love to hear about them... anything really. Shukriya - Thanks for the reply |

You should wait a few days and then send a follow up email or call. Are you in Melbourne?
I understand your reservations about NGOs through the internet but with Sanlaap, you have nothing to worry about. If you're looking for other organisations in Calcutta, here's a link (partner NGOs of the Teach India program) - Sanlaap is one of them: http://teachindia.itimes.com/public_...a-partners.php There are of course many others. I've pinged my friend - she's currently in the US - will let you know when I hear from her. Good luck! |

from my friend:
About Sanlaap-I really like the people there. They seem happy and committed to their cause. I didn;t really work work for them, I'd just go in occasionally as a volunteer, so I can't really talk about their working environment. the infrastructure of their office is okay, nothing impressive. But the quality of their publications, their reports all seems very good and very transparent. The person interested can get in touch with Anindit chaudhury-he's the director at Sanlaap. |

I can also recommend Sanlaap. When I lived in Kolkata, two of my friends were volunteering there. One liked it so much, she came back year after year. It's a very worthy and well run organisation.

Thanks for the further word of approval kismet&karma! It looks very worthwhile and yet understated indeed. I am going crazy awaiting email responses. If/when they check their inbox the people at SANLAAP are going to think I am a mad-woman!
