Great Eastern Hotel query.
I wanted to stay at the Great Eastern Hotel when I come to Calcutta next time. I walked past last year, and it looked closed or under renovation. Does anyone know the latest position?. Is it open and taking guests. ?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it seems the project is somewhat delayed. See this story:
http://www.telegraphindia.com/109053...y_11040953.jsp I hope that one day it will resurface. But for the time being it remains a building site. |

As a young boy growing up in Calcutta my family lived next door to the Great Eastern Hotel in Waterloo St. this was during the Britishraj period when the Rich and Famous stayed at this wonderful hotel. We had our informers as to the V.I.P. guests visiting. Memories of days gone by. I walked past the hotel earlier this year in March and yes I'm sorry to report only the Frontage remains which I presume is a Listed and the rest of the building has been knocked down, so don't plan for a couple of years at least to book the Presidential Suite.

Venkateshwara lodge, you stay with Sama and I, no? Forget that Great Hotel..... I'll be in Kolkata 21 JAN to 30 JAN. Traveling with Sama (Yogagal, ex-mod yoga teacher). May-be even a Kolkata meet-up, will you be intown then? PS: we're still looking for just the right place. ![]() |

My trip looks like it has to be delayed so I may be hitting Calcutta around August 8th for a few days, then on to Hyderabad for a week or two.
I think I'll try the Paramount. I'm sure the rooms look just like the picture in Sita's link. |

The rooms CAN look like that link, depends on the drugs you're taking.
But they are comfy, the A/C rooms aren't quite as salubrious. |
