Good Restaurant in Kolkata?
Hello all!
We have less than 2 weeks to start our trip! Very excited! Especially since Mom is traveling with us and it will be her first trip to India. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant (nothing poshy,i.e. hotels, etc. but some place nice)to have about 15 people meet for dinner. The place would need to be kid friendly. As for the cuisine, either Bengali or Chinese. Trying to bring some of my husbands friends and family together to meet in one place - it will save us hours traveling from house to house with 2 kids! A few years ago I went ot a Chinese restuarant on/near Park Street and it was fantastic. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name. It was upstairs. Very pretty. Any one know what it could be? Open to all and any suggestions! Thank you for reading this! ![]() |

The somewhat pricey Chinese restaurant at the corner of Sudder St and Chowringhee is very good, though not "authenic Chinese." I ate there a couple of times a few years ago and was happy with it. Sorry, can't recall the name.

At Park Street corner the chinese restaurant is 'Peping'.You also can try 'Sourav's'at Park Street. At Sarat Bose Road 'Oh Calcutta'.'Mainland China' is also very good. For Bengali cuisines you can think about 'Aheli' of Peerless Inn.In Camac Street 'Grain of Salt'is by famous chef Sanjeev Kapoor (top of Pantaloons). You can book tables beforehand in all of the above. It will be better to avoid inconvenience.
Thank you. |

Thank you Wonderwoman. Looks like we both ate good food and forgot the name of the place!
Tasurary, from the list of restaurants you listed, which one do you think would have the best ambiance for getting a large group of people together comfortably? Yes, I would definitely make a reservation! Thank you, once again, for your input!! |

I agree with Jyotida, for Bengali delicacies Aheli is great. For ambience and parking Saurav's can be considered. Moreover you can get Indian, Moghlai, Chinese & continental under one roof but in different floors in Saurav's.Crieket World Cup flavour is extra here because Saurav Ganguly is one of the owners.

Wonderwoman the chinese place you are talking about is called Jong's. It is actually two restaurants in one - chinese and indian. The indian name is something starting with Z (zhagreb?).
We ate there in January (indian side of the restaurant) - approx 3000 rp for two (but that included a bottle of wine at 1000rp). Good food and service. Grant |

Oh Calcutta for bengali food and Mainland China for Chinese. You can also try Tung Fong in Park St/Free School St. Peiping is definitely a no no, very cheap resto and food quality very poor. U can also try Jong beside Indian Museum for Chinese.

I quite like PeterCat near Park Street. And the rooftop restaurant at the Lindsay Hotel, "Blue and Beyond".
Tried Peiping — as a Chinese person, I hated it. |

it seems you've already left for your trip, so perhaps this is too late. if not, have a look at this thread, which i began by collecting a list of great eateries from cross-referencing several books and recommendations on this and other sites:
kolkata restaurants and "must-tastes"?
