Hello,

Can anyone tell me if there is a govt service available from Kolkata to Ganga Sagar and back? WB Tourism has a steamer arrangement and that too only on 14-15 Jan.

I will be going on Jan 17. Also, will it be very crowded owing to the Ganga Sagar Mela? I have a 3 year old with me so was wondering whether it would be fine travelling with her to Ganga Sagar.

Many thanks!

West Bengal Tourism arranged that tour to coincide with "Mela".

During rest of the year you may go by car or train and then by a vessel but these vessels are not run by the West Bengal government. And it is likely to be crowded during the mela and for a few days thereafter.

Here is a link that describes in short about the Mela and you can see the crowd in one photo attached:

http://overindia.com/west-bengal/ganga-sagar/

I am not sure but heard that other permanent type of accommodation
is also available these days so that you can visit at other times.

However, if your purpose of visit is mainly pilgrimage and not purely tourism the time of the Mela is the only period to go there. There is no problem if you and your child have experienced Melas like the Kumbh. Otherwise, it may be a problem if you are suddenly amidst so many people at the same time. Please be informed that despite every precaution taken by the Government cases of loss of life due to some accidents are not totally unheard of.

In the mean time I shall try to collect information from local sources about the guest house or other facilities available at the island and post it here.

I am informed that the Bharat Sevasram Sangha has a guest house attached to its ashrama at the sagar island. You may contact the organisation's Head Quarters at Kolkata:

Address: 264A Rash Behari Avenue, Kolkata-700019.

Phone Numbers: 033 24405178, 24402327.

Hi,

I agree with Debasis, if you have prior experience to be among a large crowd you can visit Sagar during Mela...otherwise a big NO.
There are very few places to stay at Sagar Island. Bharat Sevasram is one of them. There is a Zilla Parishad guest house, irrigation dept. bunglow, a hotel...Larica Sagar Vihar (phone numbers not working) and some other govt. guest houses. During Mela you'll not get these govt guest houses because of the VIP's who visit the Mela. Bharat Sevasram has a guest house but during mela you'll not get rooms...they provide tents during the mela time.

Another important thing is the vessel timings...during low tides you may have to wait for hours as vessels could not travel in the shallow water.
During mela you can't take your vehicle upto Sagar island. You'll have to park your vehicle at Lot-8 (one has to cross river from here to reach Sagar island) and get a vessel for Sagar island. After crossing the river you'll have to take a bus or share jeep/trekker and travel 30km to reach the Mela venue.
Quite troublesome during mela with a child. I would suggest you to avoid the Mela season and visit Ganga Sagar in mid February....
I've seen some buses today going to Ganga Sagar with pilgrims and some Sadhus have already arrived Kolkata and made their camps.

Thank you debasis and Dhrubatara. We are actually doing a day trip to Ganga Sagar. Leave early morning and return late evening the same day. I will however now probably stay back with my daughter and let my mom do the trip by herself.

Hello,

Can anyone tell me if there is a govt service available from Kolkata to Ganga Sagar and back? WB Tourism has a steamer arrangement and that too only on 14-15 Jan.

I will be going on Jan 14 as i reached kolkata from jamshedpur on 13th ningh from jansatabadi and returning ticket on 15th noon. Also, will it be very crowded owing to the Ganga Sagar Mela? I have a 3 senior citizen and 10 year old child with me so was wondering whether it would be fine travelling with them to Ganga Sagar.

Many thanks!

I was at Ganga Sagar Mela a couple of years ago, going independently.

It was very crowded. Going there wasn't too bad, except we had to wait many hours for a place on a ferry and by the time we arrived it was dark. We had started in the morning, so I don't know if it is feasable to do this as a day trip.

The best bet for accomodation are the missions. Both ISKCON and Rama Krishna had missions on the island and we were lucky to get dormitory space at Rama Krishna Mission. If you plan to do this, better get in touch with them beforehand. When I was there, drinking water was getting scarce on one day.

The really frightening part was the return journey, when we were almost crushed in the crowd waiting for the boat. Some people fainted.

I will never do this again, but if you can get to the island one or two days before and leave well after the event it should be much easier.

Try to reach Sagar one day earlier to the snan date or else you'll get stuck in the traffic jam and crowd....

The only way to reach Ganga Sagar from Lot 8 is to take a ferry. This service gets suspended for long hours due to low tides...
