Durga Puja - amazing!
Well as travellers accidently happening on the biggest festival in Kolkata we were impressed!
We travelled last night to Muhammed Ali Park to wait in line along with tens of thousands of people to view the Durga idols along with the fantastic, massive mandaps that house them (thanks for the informative post sadhuji!). We were befriended by a local who gave us a tour of many of the other mandaps in the area and were thoroughly exhausted after walking, queueing, and taking in the crowds, colours, and mechanically moving street artwork of Durga and Ganesh etc. It really was a fantastic cultural experience. I read in the Times this morning that the immersion of the idols in Hooghly river may be delayed until Sunday or Monday as people want to extend the festival this year. Does anyone know if any earlier immersions are taking place as we may be leaving tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday and don't want to miss out on the final festival act! cheers,

Oh - luckily we managed to buy tickets for 25 Rp on a half-hour cruise from Millenium park down past all the ghats to see the immersion of the idols.

Hi All,
Durga Puja is one of the best puja's that is celebrated in Calcutta. I do not know the date but it usually happens on the end of the 9th day of Navratri. I personally love these days as it has a lot of holidays as a package to offer and also partying. Do let me know if you need any other information in specific. I will find it out and let you know the details. Cheers, Amit Khattar |
