Diners' dilemma
Looking for a good eating joint to take extended family out to lunch / dinner (12-15 capitae)
Need to have an estimate of the avg. per head charges (excluding alcohol) for: 1. Sourav's (is it good? I've heard reports to the contrary) 2. Oh Calcutta at Inox (eaten there once, loved it) 3. Some great new (preferably Chinese) joint in South or Central Calcutta (not old Park St. favorites - have already been there too many times previously). Not looking at lounge bars and the like: diners' ages range from 2 to 83. Would welcome any information. Thanks in advance.

Avoid Sourav's - its a big disappointment.
Apart from Mainland China, you can try Marco Polo on Sarat Bose Road. Another good Chinese restaurant is Royal Jade near Ruby Hospital. It is a fairly new restaurant, opened on the day Beijing Olympics kicked off. Run by a Chinese family, the food is very good.

thanks.
Not too keen on chain restaurants like Mainland China. Royal Jade sounds interesting: is the decor good and is the ambience nice? Any other suggestions - any Vietnamese or Sri Lankan or Japanese restaurants - something exotic? Five star hotels apart. |

Royal Jade is good - decor and ambiance, though nothing exotic. You can compare it with most of the Park Street restaurants.
Japanese - I can think of Jong beside Indian Museum. Also there is a resturant 'The Wall' near Deshapriya Park on Lansdown Road. It serves oriental cuisine. |

I agree with Kausiks about Royal Jade - good food, okay ambience, reasonable prices. It's actually our 2nd fav Chinese Restaurant here. Our fav is Big Boss in Tangra. Not much ambience there.
We like The Wall, also mentioned above. Kinda pricey, though. No Vietnamese or Sri Lankan here that I know of. |

Ivory restaurant on Camac Street....meal cost for 10 about a year back (no alcoholic barring the two pegs of rum I had on the sly in the presence of stern ancient relatives) was Rs. 5,500 approx.

Wanted to share that I've found a website which stores scanned menu cards of restaurants and food joints in their site with contact details. The site is www.foodiebay.com.
This presently supports Kolkata, Delhi and NCR only though. Enjoy!
