Avoid Sudder street thats all.Its not a very important place at all that you should run in Sudder street in midnight or any time at all for any purpose. Foreigners who prefer cheap hotels cluster near sudder street as many such hotels are
here .Hippies, Bangladesis, Pakistanis , Arabs , Iranis all are seen here.

In fact sometimes foreigners are arrested by Calcutta police every year for selling drugs in this area. I can remeber a case few days ago.One french man was running NAKED on this road and he was also trying to climb a tree when police wanted to ask about his problems.Police ultimately arrested him ( Indian Police generally avoid arresting white skinned stuffs) and found the man was on load of heavy drug addiction. Also he was carrying some drugs.

I wonder how a naked man can carry drugs.I could not find the answer in newspaper.

You do NOT want to know.

Even more, you do NOT want to find yourself in the company of a customs or police officer who is going to find out if you are carrying them.

I was in Kolkata for 2 weeks last year.

I stayed at the Broadway Hotel and used to walk back there after meeting up with friends who were staying in the Sudder Street area.
Nobody bothered me at all and it's great walking around Kolkata when the streets are nearly empty.

Of course there is crime (and according to the news media it's all committed by Bangladeshis........) but not flashing cash and not trailing gold chains is always a sensible precaution.

So- no more scaremongering.

Kolkata is India's most cultured and fascinating city -

DO NOT MISS IT!!!!!

Well, I was staying in Sudder Street at the time that that French guy was climbing up a tree with no idea of how to descend to the ground. We were in a decent hotel. But it is a complete fallacy that Sudder Street is some kind of a Sodom and Gomorrah! There you will find a microcosm of life. It is no secret that I am a fan of Kolkata. I do not feel in the least bit unsafe there. But I don't wear jewels and I don't own a mobile phone.

Come on, Chief, we Bengalis are very accommodative, we have the patience of listening to others and then convert their so-called roars into meows. Come on, speak out.

Captain Mahajan, nice to find someone else with a rich Airport Security Lady fantasy life: I still recall with fondness being escorted by TWO superb Singaporean persons, carrying wicked small black shiny machine-guns, and wearing STARCHED uniforms. Ah me. They were keeping the Lion State safe from men whose hair reached their collars.
