Hibernating may be...But Kolkata is safe safe safe, more so for tourists. Somebody may try to charge them a little if got chance but thats all, physical denger? I am not ready to digest it. Rare, really. The place may not be organized, clean etc etc but safe, yes till now. Trust us

I vaguely remember a sanwich in a coffee bar in Sudder Street last November that might, if one stretched the definition, qualify as a crime against a tourist - but definitely a minor misdemeanour concerning quantities of ketchup. Other than that, I think I'd prefer Kolkata to Kleveland.

In this part of the world, rather further South, I notice a disturbing increase in robbery and street crime. Street crime is, by majority, aimed at gold chains (sadly, often worn by elderly women), but the mobile-phone theft that is the staple of petty criminals in many parts of the world is on the increase. If this is the case in Chennai, that tends to lag behind, then my wild extrapolation says it is probably worse in the larger cities.

However, I cannot remember a single instance in which a tourist, or even a foreign resident, was the victim.

That's because the foreign resident is doubly careful.

He / She does not wear gold chains and specifically will not walk in the roads while talking over the mobile...

I think tiger940804 is politically motivated to criminalize one of the safest citis in India - Kolkata. Unfortunately a few Kolkata based media houses promotes only wrong things about Kolkata, with a clear political motive. We cant blame tiger940804 alone.

My wife is always telling me to be more careful than I am! maybe because the Indian resident is doubly protective

Both of us, Indian wife and Brit husband talk on the phone on the street (and I often think how, in London, I would not even be safe to have my phone visible!) but (neither of us are into gold bling anyway) said Indian wife never wears gold, not even gold-plated, jewellery in the street, and never has.

Not that I had lived in Kolkata, many friends and relatives of mine living in various parts of the world have visited Kolkata and never complained about any harassments. I personally think that Kolkata is pretty safe.

I have lived in Calcutta for two years. Someone tried to steal my mobile when I was on Chowringhee near Sudder. And I have an Indian friend whose wallet stolen on the bus and another friend whose mobile was stolen out of his pants pocket.

However, I agree that Calcutta is relatively safe as far as violent crime, but people do need to be extra careful with the pick-pockets.

What people need to watch for are the speeding buses.

Poor old Tiger is getting a harder time that perhaps he /she deserves. Tiger is American and fear seems to be big on the agenda in the US. How about cutting him/her some slack??
In the name of good will.

I've heard there is a lot of TORTURE in USA, and that people are sent to concentration camps by airport officials. Is it true?

Hey, don't knock US airport officials. One of the highlights of my last trip was when a uniformed blonde with a gun told me to take off my belt
