I´ve never felt anything other than safe in Kolkata, maybe having very broad shoulders and a neck like a bull helps.
Seriously though,i have never felt treatened or known anyone else to have troubles in Kolkata. London,Paris,Frankfurt,Amsterd am,Lisbon,LA and New York seem to be far more threatening.

I agree on that, Kolkata is probably the city in india i feel the most safe, even down dark alleys and in the slum

If you have heard that there is a lot, shouldn't you be telling us?

Either you substantiate what you heard or refrain from making false statements.

Kolkata is not a city known for its high crime rate anyway, and for you to say it's directed at tourists makes me wonder about the veracity of your information.

Can you elaborate or provide any details on this crime directed at tourists?

Well, I suppose that Tiger might have hear something vague --- and be looking for more reliable information, but his post itself is pretty vague.

The only area I can think of that would have Western tourists as targets for crime is Sudder Street, but that is partly because at least some of the tourists are there for cheap drugs and so mix with unsavoury types.

A couple of years ago it was worse. I remember reading an article on Shudder Street in a Kolkata newspaper.

Edit: found it

Shudder Street

The worst problem on Sudder Street is the beggars, many of whom (I was told) are Bangladeshis. Wherever they are from, they wear beautiful sarees (ironed, in fact) and some of 'em have some nice gold nose studs and bangles. Perhaps they think foreigners don't notice those items.

It's surprising that the cat-in-the-guise-of-tiger has nothing to say here, although he has opened another thread on Kolkata's biggest red-light area. It seems he is more bothered about crime there, although he has generalised about the city.

Kolkata's pretty safe. I've been here eight months with my partner - walking around after midnight is the only time we've ever had truly adverse attention (and that's only been twice since arriving).
