I know an Indian Music Academy located in Kolkata -- ITC Sangeet Research Academy. This academy organises concerts of their students as well as gurus.
More details regarding the academy, visit http://www.itcsra.org/sra_index/sra_index.asp

Are you really seeking carnatic music?
If so, you should travel South to Chennai! If you are seeking classical music more generally, then I'm sure Kolkata will have Hindustani music on offer.

Thank you tasuray for such a great information. I've found that 'Dover Lane Music Conference' starts at 21 January 2008. I and my wife arrive in Kolkata exactly at that date, so we have a perfect chance to attend a conference. Only one thing is unclear, whether would be possible to get the tickets same day?

Website information
Here is the link for the 2007 schedule http://www.thedoverlanemusicconferen...g/schedule.php and at the bottom it lists some ways to purchase tickets.
Did you find the 2008 schedule? I do not see it on their website and my son will be in Kokata the night of 25 January so this might be wonderful. For some of the programs for 2007 it notes it as "Night Long." What does that mean in terms of timing? I have never been to a concert in Inida. Edward |

Hello kurkusas,
You are in Kolkata at mid of January, then definitely my link wont help you a lot. Generally the classical music concerts happens in winters only. I suggested ITC SRA because they too have many concerts happening during December 2007 to March 2008. In Kolkata, they are having concerts on Dec 1 & Dec 2 ,2007. Well if your world like to know about their concerts, details can be found at http://www.itcsra.org/sra_sammelan/s...n_archive.html Regards -- Ann |

The dover lane concert is the mother of all classical music concerts in India. Most great masteros had made their mark and debut at this great concert.
Some performances strech till the crack of dawn. I remember walking back home through the mists of winter Kolkata around me and the stains of heavenly music in my brain. |

Nick may not know the classical music heritage of Kolkata.Tansen Music Conference, Sadarang Music Conference,Entally Music conference and Dover lane and many others have a history more than 50 years.Due to change of taste and other issues, many of these ended their journey. But Dover lane is still running in full swing.Jyotida may throw some light on the history.

No, I am very ignorant of Northern matters. It is a big shame, though, when good music events fall by the wayside.
Still... long life to the survivor! |

Dover Lane 2008 schedule
Schedule for 2008 has finally been posted for Dover Lane. I will be there the last day 25 January and perhaps will try to go. Can someone give me an idea of how to get to them from the New Market area (I will be staying just southwest of NM). About how long would it take to get to them?
Also any idea of where to purchase a ticket? I will arrive in Kolkata early morning of the 25th by train to Howrah Station. Thanks, Edward Venue: Nazrul Mancha, Rabindra Sarobar Kolkata - 700029 (Beside Dhakuria Lake adjacent to Meghnad Saha Sarani) http://www.thedoverlanemusicconferen...g/schedule.php |

For decades the Dover lane concert has mesmerised lovers of Indian classical music. Many die hard music lovers come to Kolkata from far corners of the country to savour music.
This concert had always been some thing like a spring board. Getting a chance to play/sing here means the artist has ARRIVED. If you love classical music if possible try to experience this concert where the masters perform surrounded by real lovers of music and that is some combination. |
