The Disciple

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0787511/

Is it a coincidence that so many of these directors are from East Bengal?

Oh Jyotida, it's absolutely great. The way you described the movie - it's amazing to say the least.

Yes, Tdancer, perhaps everything about bengal is fascinating. Another aspect you must have felt by this time - the way we welcome outsiders into our circle. Why don't you make calcutta your second home ?!

films by Rituporno Ghosh are nice to watch.........most of his films are centered around female characters

in recent past there had been few films on non-resident bengali community e.g. namesake, the bong connection

Hi Khak! Yes, I really liked the film of "The Namesake". I was expecting to be disappointed because the book was so brilliant, but in fact it matched up to expectations. (By the way, I am looking forward to reading JL's new book "Unaccustomed Earth".

What is the film "The Bong Connection"?

Is that by chance a Bollywood film rather than a Tollywood?

Add to your list Rituparno's Anuranan (resonance)
Anjan's Saanj batir ropokatha (fable of the evening lamp)
Bappaditya's Kaal & Kanta taaar

Anjan Dutta, according to imdb, is one of the "angry young men" of Bengali cinema. OK, I am following, Mousourik!

Jyotida: thanks for the latest suggestions.

Dancer I wish you had some other film than Titash... may be Subornorekha.... but since you know us so much you may like this film.... waiting for your comments.. when ever a retrospective is held I try to seat next to young people including my daughters and try to feel how they react... so far I found them appreciating more than we did !!

ps
please please please try and watch majid madjidi's movies yyam - you wont regret it - promise i'm a-contemplating on whether to have a crush on him or not!!!!!
ooh you've struck a chord with the mention of Madjidi. Few films are better than Rang-e khoda (Colour of Paradise). 'Baran' is also a great film of his. Thank you for mentioning him. My heart fills when I think of these films.

I was watching 'Raincoat', a Ghosh movie the other night, that stopped playing half way through. Very frustrating. 'Choker Bali' was a nicely shot movie and an interesting story, also by Ghosh, both starring Aishwarya.
