Every year the Anglo-Indian community celebrate Christmas with a week long street party which is held at Bow Barracks near Bow Bazaar Police Stn. (Chandni Chowk metro stn ) The street is decorated, and on one of the days they have a really good Live Band playing Rock, Reggae and music to suit all taste. Worth visiting on this day in particular as its a great atmosphere. Father Christmas usually arrives either by rickshaw or on a push-cart..amusing, makes good pics. They hold a New Year's Eve Ball, which I am sure you could possibly get an invite to. I'm told this is the place to have a right 'knees up.' Very friendly people and good ambience.
Enjoy.

Brilliant! Thank you for that nugget of information as I will be in Calcutta for Xmas, coming from Varanasi. Any thoughts on a place to visit on the way to Calcutta? I don't really want to rush around too much Ta Noz

En route to Cal.
Hi
would definitely reccommend a stopover at the laid back beach resort of Puri. You can get to Puri directly from Varanasi. From Puri to Cal. you can either take an overnight journey, or same day by an early morning Exress train. It's 500km. Places to stay: Checkout The Buddhist Temple in Bow Bazaar next to the Bow Bazaar Police Stn. accepts paying guests. Rooms are spartan but the welcome is warm. Its centrally located, 2 mins from Chandni Chowk metro. Tel 223 67138. Any more info on Cal. just PM me. Haemish |

Take an evening stroll in Park street too. Try the cakes and puddings at Kathleen's & Nahoum's in New Market.

Hmm Puri or Calcutta for Xmas now...
Hi all - thanks for the posts - I am now thinking that a beach for Xmas might be quite lovely so maybe Puri instead of Calcutta???? Decisions decisions. British Raj - you recommended a place in Puri called Ranger - it looks lovely. Can you tell me a bit more? Is outside Puri as the details say 15kms on Puri Konark road?
Cheers |

Flurries for tea and cakes or perhaps an icecream at magnolias, Hotgram from the New market or a Khati roll from Nizams.. then a movie at The Lighthouse or the New Empire. Ah yes, Christmas in Cal. there was indeed magic in the air. I had just returned from my school in Darjeeling for the Christmas hols. Those were the days my friends..I thought they'd never end ( Beatles )
Thanks for the memories. |
