Always insist they use the meter as far as poss. and the electronic meter is set at zero. (old type meters ensure the 'Flag' is Down) The fare you will be required to pay will be DOUBLE the amount shown on the meter PlUS Rs.2 Taxi fare charts are available to buy from vendors on the streets that you see approaching cars at traffic lights and traffic jams selling red dusters.

Pre-Paid taxies from the Airport / Howrah Stn. Directions to Sudder St. (In case the driver is not familiar with Sudder St.) Use the Indian Museum on Chowringee / Sudder St. corner or The Fire Brigade Stn. on Free School St. as a Reference point.

Howrah Stn. to Sudder St. should cost'about' Rs.65 to 70

It should make you pocket lighter by around Rs 300 - Rs 350. If you are coming from the airport, it is better if you take a pre-paid taxi by paying at the taxi counter at the airport. The charges are slightly higher than if you manage to catch a taxi on your own. But in such a case, you might be taken for a ride and end up paying much higher!!
PS: The approx charge that I mentioned above is the charge of a pre-paid taxi from airport to Tollygunge

Should be about Rs.250 to 300. or more IF you are taken by the Scenic Route! Tell the driver to take you by way of the Eastern ByPass past the RUBY HOSPITAL to Spencers Shopping Mall ( Kali Kapoor ) Turn Right and make for Jadhapur Thana to SOUTH CITY MALL. From Prince Anwar Sahaha turn right. These are just ref. points.
