For information only.

Always insist they use the meter as far as poss. and the electronic meter is set at zero. (old type meters ensure the 'Flag' is Down) The fare you will be required to pay will be DOUBLE the amount shown on the meter PlUS Rs.2 Taxi fare charts are available to buy from vendors on the streets that you see approaching cars at traffic lights and traffic jams selling red dusters.

Pre-Paid taxies from the Airport / Howrah Stn. Directions to Sudder St. (In case the driver is not familiar with Sudder St.) Use the Indian Museum on Chowringee / Sudder St. corner or The Fire Brigade Stn. on Free School St. as a Reference point.

Howrah Stn. to Sudder St. should cost'about' Rs.65 to 70

A bit more at night.

And be ready to navigate if you arrive after 3pm and Sudder Street has changed direction and is now one-way the wrong way.

It should make you pocket lighter by around Rs 300 - Rs 350. If you are coming from the airport, it is better if you take a pre-paid taxi by paying at the taxi counter at the airport. The charges are slightly higher than if you manage to catch a taxi on your own. But in such a case, you might be taken for a ride and end up paying much higher!!
PS: The approx charge that I mentioned above is the charge of a pre-paid taxi from airport to Tollygunge

Taxi Fare to Tolly and suggested route.

Should be about Rs.250 to 300. or more IF you are taken by the Scenic Route! Tell the driver to take you by way of the Eastern ByPass past the RUBY HOSPITAL to Spencers Shopping Mall ( Kali Kapoor ) Turn Right and make for Jadhapur Thana to SOUTH CITY MALL. From Prince Anwar Sahaha turn right. These are just ref. points.

Hard to explain other than to say just walk out of the new platforms and it will be right in front of you as you exit the station (approximately in front of Platform 20 if I remember correctly). If you are unsure, just ask another passenger or a coolie/porter. Do not ask touts or people loitering around casually. This will advertise that you are new to Cal and invite more touts.

Azad Hind arrives before 4 AM. It is likely that the pre-paid stand will not be operational then. The pre-paid taxi booth seems to close down in the night and you are left at the mercy of taxi operators who will rip you off. If there are children or elderly or if you have luggage, the situation will be even worse. Suggest you arrange to hire a car and get it to meet your folks at the station.

The Taxi Fares are revised from 1st November 2012.

the new formula or equation is Meter Reading X 2.4 + 1 = New Fare

See this link for detail http://shobjaanta.blogspot.in/2012/1...-calcutta.html

Anirban,
Thanks for your very useful post. It looks horribly complicated to calculate the new fares.

Excellent blog by the way.

YES IT IS REALLY COMPLICATED TO CALCULATE THE ACTUAL FARE..

WE MAY TRY THIS..

STEP 1: DOUBLE THE METER READING

STEP 2: ADD 20% OF THE ABOVE WITH IT.

STEP 3; ADD Re.1 WITH THE RESULT.

SO IF METER READING IS Rs.50/- THEN

01. Rs.50/-*2=Rs. 100/-
02. (Rs.100/-*20%)+Rs.100/- = Rs. 120/-
03. Rs. 120/- + Re. 1/- = Rs. 121/-.

One of the nice things about being traditionally educated in Kolkata is that I don't find multiplying by 2.4 to be "horribly complicated". But for those that do, you may find that your cell phones (even many dumb cell phones) have calculators built in.

Now what seems to be impossibly complicated is recalibrating the meters so they read the correct fare. They used to do this periodically in the old days even with the analog meters; now, even with digital technology where it should be trivial, they don't do it at all.
