Calcutta markets
By markets I mean fruit, veg, meat, fish........ NOT Pantaloons, Westside and malls, but where locals would go to shop for the fresh essentials. Am I asking too much to know if these places are adjacent to Metro stations.
I know New Market where you are supposed to be able to buy anything but it is such a guddle. Also is there such a thing as an online map of Calcutta, at present I only have the Govt one which though OK is not too comprehensive. Thanks in advance to all |

I've noticed lately that googlemaps is doing pretty good maps of the major Indian cities, these days. I don't know how it rates compared to the tourist maps, or whether every single little back alley is in there. But it's been giving me a good idea of where things are and how things are laid out.

In the city the metro runs below large avenues so that at most exits you would hardly find such markets right at the exit. But at either end you might get close to markets, or be not far from one on some other exit. Some Kolkatan member will know better.

Hi fsg,
Which metro station do you want to mean? Say, adjacent to DumDum there is a big market called DumDum bazar.Shyambazar market is nearer to Shyambazar and Sovabazar metro stations.College Street market is nearer to Mahatma Gandhi Road station.Koley market is not exactly near but you can approach from Central Station. From Chandni Chowk you can go to Zanbazar market. From Esplanade New market is nearer. From Netaji Bhavan station Jagubabu bazar is nearer. So and so and so. |

Thanks tasuray, very helpful, can you tell me what these markets specialise in, or are they just general.
Regarding maps, do Eicher do one of Calcutta? Last time I was there just wandering around the back streets was fascinating enough , a little more structure would be good. |

Do not miss the Sunday market at Hathibagan. Every thing under the Sun is sold here, a great sight.

Sunday Hatibagan market which is mentioned by Jyotida is now shifted to Galif Street. It is famous for plants, pigeons, rabbits, dogs, birds, fis hes etc. Before the ban on wild and extinct animals, kites even cubs of lepard were available there.
Koley market is famous for bulk fresh vegetables and in College Street market (in the morning) you will get bulk fruits in auction.Manicktala market is famous for good quality of fresh fishes.Patipukur Fish market (nearer to Belgachia metro station) is for bulk fishes.Even from Andhra Pradesh,Orissa insulated trucks come here full with fishes. |
