Arriving to Kolkata Floods
We are arriving next week on Saturday to Kolkata and we are a bit concerned about the flood situation. We honestly don't mind except for the transport/disease factor. We are reading updates continuously and it looks like (hopefully) it might settle down. We know that the Kolkata airport was closed for a day or two and we're afraid that we might get stuck as we're not in Kolkata for very long.
Can anyone who has knowledge of this give us some advice. (We're happy to change flights and come back to Kolkata later, if recommended). Thanks. |

Disease will not normally be a factor, unless you are eating and drinking bad stuff.
Transport can be. kolkata can get paralysed in flooding, airport to town a nightmare, knee deep water in quite a few places; specially at high tide. All depends on which area you are staying in, actually. Besides the weather forecast, which isn't too good. But flooding in Kolkata has much to do with the tides as well. Maybe you will get lucky. http://weather.msn.com/tenday.aspx?w...=wc:IN XX0028 |

things are normally under control...except some bad days when it rains heavily...otherwise you will have no problem. It is not flooded but waterlogged for a day or two if there is heavy rain. We have experienced about 3-4 such occasions in this season.

you may have to do a bit of wading, so you need shorts and slippers. it's never very bad, the water goes down in a day or so. transport may get a little paralyzed though, but it is possible to get around. i manage to attend office even though my office is situated in an area which is notorious for waterlogging. maybe you can hire a big car, like a tata sumo? that will definitely make things easier. best of luck

Be careful about open sewer manholes. Its part of the effort to get drainage..
