April/May Weather in Kolkata

Hoping to hear from any resident Bengali's out there - possibly travelling to Kolkata in april/may and concerned that it may be too hot. Current temps are anything from low, to mid, to high 30's depending on which site I look at - can anyone confirm?

I guess interpretations are different for each of us, but are these months considered a good time to visit or will the weather make it unpleasant?

Since I'll be in Calcutta in mid-April, I too would very much like to hear any information on how debilitating the weather is during the summer.

When I was there years ago at the end of March to the beginning of April it was brutally hot. I would go outside in the daytime for 10 minutes and would be covered in sweat. Spent most of the daytime in my room in the dark getting wet in the shower and then standing under the fan naked whilst wet. It cooled me off alittle. Soon got the hell out and headed up to Nepal where the weather was perfect.

March - April will be warm to hot in daytime,
evening more or less pleasant, as we often get
northwesterly ( locally call kaal boisakhi)
alongwith squally showers , which brings down
the temperature. May will be really hot.

Hi Indiamad,

I am in Kolkata for last 5 years. The weather during April/ May definitely will be very hot. In kolkata, generally summer starts at the mid or end of march which continues throughout April, May & mid of June.

The best time to visit Kolkata is Feb/Mar when the weather is not too cold nor hot... or Oct/Nov where u can enjoy Durga puja as well.

Thanks all.

Guess will be staying indoors during the heat of the day.....I'm thinking frosty shopping malls and cinemas might do the trick

I'm from the tropics where mid to high 30's are typical summer temps so hopefully that might prepare me somewhat....fingers and toes crossed.

If I do brave it outside I'll be armed with a water spray, fan and an umbrella, will look REALLY stupid

but I won't really care!

Welcome to Kolkata.
Indiamad, as you are from topic where mid to high 30 is not a great thing but I think it is humidity that will make all the difference here in Kolkata during April / May. And you will not look stupid with your arms – they are required. So don’t worry. In addition I’ll request you to drink water as much as possible.

Well I was in Delhi for nearly 12 Years means I complted my schooling in delhi....

yes, there is no doubt about it. BTW, this year weather is comparatively better till now.
