Unfortunately, taxis seem to be the only available transport out of the airport. Barring may be a few stray incidents, the prepaid system is always better. It is again unfortunate that some taxi drivers may behave differently with a person looking non-Indian but remember that a passenger is not supposed to pay anything extra over and above what is charged at the counter and they have a fixed rate for particular locations. The taxi fares also keep changing (generally hiked)in keeping with the fuel price and that's official. During the day time there should be no problem at all. However, for a single person, if arriving late at night, say beyond 22hrs. local time, it may be advisable to pay something extra and avail the hotel pick-up facility.

local bus
Well, in the end in was easy. When arriving during the day time you just go out from the airport hall, walk about 500 meters to a main road and take a local bus to Esplanade /if you want to get to Sudder st./ Ask the people for the number of the bus - I think it was 63. It costs 10 rupees. And it is a good fun.

airport - prepaid taxis
Srinath,
The fare from airport to Howrah station may be around INR 300. Please make a call to your hotel on the day prior to your arrival asking if there is any strike by the cabs on the particular day. |
