Airfair From Bangkok
Hi all. I'm currently looking at airfairs to Kolkata from my home country. However it seems that its looking better to just fly to Bangkok and arrange it from there. I would like to know if anyone can tell me roughly how much a return airfair from Bangkok to Kolkata is? Thank you guys in advance

Olavi Tours is an established Kho San Road travel agency and their website currently shows a Bangkok-Kolkata rt with Jet Airlines for 11,800 Baht (which would be around US$342 at current rates). You could probably do better prowling the street, but that gives you a rough idea.

Hey, thanks for looking that up for me. Very nice of you. Yep, sounds expensive but lets see what others reply.

Yep, a few years ago one-way fares of US 110-120 were common, but I don't know the current situation and fuel surcharges and the reduced number of flights could have changed things a lot. Hopefully someone with recent experience will pop up with better news.

Try sites like makemytrip.com or ezeego1.co.in or yatra.com for finding the best fares! Return Bangkok-Kolkata fare should be around Rs. 17,500 ! ( Approx 650 NZ$ )

Sort of a gamble either way but it is a shorter flight from Bangkok and it is a lot cheaper to stay there if you get stuck for a few days.
If your travel plans for India extend beyond Kolkata, it might be to your advantage to check out Singapore Airlines which has several destinations in India and you could arrange an open-jaw ticket and return from a different city -- i.e. arrive Kolkata and leave from, say, Bangalore or Mumbai and save backtracking. I don't know anything about NZ fares, but the Singapore website indicates an inclusive fare of NZ$2800 for a RT to India in January, so I don't know if this is reasonable or not. |

Thats quite high. Just to give a bit of a jist of it. I can get from here (NZ) return to bangkok for about NZ$1,600 and kolkata for around $NZ2,500. Have been quoted a bit less but didn't trust the travel agent.

Ah yes, that does make it a bit more interesting. I think the problem for your local agent is that the 'add-on' price available on the net is probably quite high. For the hell of it, I checked Kayak.com (which I sometimes use for reference as they survey a bunch of on line sites) and the prices were around $500.
I'm somehow on the mailing list of another Bangkok travel agent (travel connections or sometimes called Charlie's travel) and I checked their site and see a special promotion for a 90 day BKK-CCU-BKK flight for 8500 Baht (which does not include taxes). This would be around $NZ425 or US$242 plus whatever taxes/surcharges apply. I've never used this agency, but it might be worth getting a quote from him -- he's also been around a long time and has an ok reputation. http://www.travelconnecxion.com/search_airfares.php |

Hi WF!
You should definitely check up the Air India Express Website: http://www.airindiaexpress.in/ Their fares normally don't come up on the ticket aggregators websites, but they are the cheapest I have seen. A return ticked, if booked in advance, should cost you arnd $200. All the best and have a good time in Kolkata! |
