Do you have the registration number of the taxi with you? Nowadays there are taxis with printers plying in Kolkata. If you have ridden one of them and have the money receipt slip, you can contact the nearest police station with it.

And, every taxi driver in Kolkata is not dishonest, and you can contact the nearest police station of your boarding and alighting point.

This is exactly what a police officer said to one of my senior, who lost his backpack at a rail station that had a laptop, his passport and other things. But he never said something like, "this was Belgium and that too Antwerp".

PS - Eukatcendouz, don't forget to leave your hotel address and contact number to the police station (I think they will ask for it themselves, but if they don't in any case).

Some taxi drivers may cruise at the same location every night. The OP could go back to Park Street around the same time he took the cab and enquire. Also from other taxi drivers.

You need to drink less schnapps and more Almdudler before you come here.

One more thing can be done.

If the cab was engaged from a certain stand, other cab drivers of the stand would help Eukatcendouz in tracing the original driver.

If cab was left at a certain building/point, cab driver might approach the point to surrender the belongings.

One thing is to keep in mind: all the drivers are not dishonest!

Let's hope for the best!

Unless you had them in a bag with your name and address on them and if he was an honest cab driver then how would he know how to find you to give them back? Afraid there's a snowball in hells chance of ever seeing them again.

Stranger things have happened. Taxi drivers and auto drivers have sometimes gone to abnormal lengths to return even huge amounts of cash (hundreds of thousands of rupees), including tracking down the passenger/s using pick up and drop off locations, reporting to the cops etc. Seems to happen more often that one would expect.

Well I hope for the OP that that's the case. But also, does a taxi driver really always look on the back for left stuff. In reality, the next fare could have found the stuff and left with it. So if the OP were by some miracle find the driver and the driver claims to know nothing about it, he could be telling the truth. Still a very long shot.

Thanks a lot to everybody !
Of course i can't remember the number of the cab, and even not the face of the taxi driver : often I enjoy trying to talk to the drivers in Kolkata, cool people I think, but this precise evening I was exhausted after a full day of wandering in Kolkata (amazing day btw, in this very nice city).
I went to the police station in Gariahat and on Park street and did a declaration in the first one, i have the number of Kolkata taxi association and will call them tomorrow. But yes, one chance out of a thousand to find these camera again...
I don't care about the coolpix, and I could give it for free to the driver if he would return my Rolleiflex, which he is probably going to sell for 100 Rs as a trash on a random market...

Rather I thought, it will be same for almost every city around the world. Because what happened with OP, the chances of recovery is very thin for most of the places across the globe.

Ya, maybe! Why was Kolkata mentioned in such a negative light, then?

Very appropriate and timely advice. But does it work well for the film cameras too?
