which of the route to munnar is more beautiful and scenic?
from kochi or from Coimbatore?
i think the route from coimbatore is little lengthy but is it worth it?

i liked the route from thekkady (periyar), but that's probably not where ur going?

The route from Coimbatore would definetly be more
Scenic, comming in through Marayoor.

Hi, How is the condition of the road from Coimbatore to Munnar? Among the three routes Coimbatore-Munnar, Madurai-Munnar and Kottayam-Munnar, which is better? I am mainly looking at the quality of the road and ease of driving, from the point of view of going in a car. Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Completely in agreement. This under rated route has stunning scenery ranging from a dense range of forests - deciduous/ shola/ sandalwood, high mountains, prehistoric dolmens, cave paintings, deep valleys, waterfalls, tea estates and two wildlife sanctuaries thrown in.

The distance from Coimbatore to Munnar is undoubtedly longer than from Cochin to Munnar but it is well worth it, and a halt can be made at Marayoor which is a good place to stay to enjoy this region.

Absolutely coming in from Coimbatore. It's stunning! Just make sure that the National Park you pass through is open late enough for you to make it through before they close (and for your driver to get back if you have a driver).

The Cochin route is pretty dull, up until the last 30 min or so.

Hi Velu,

I would like to know the condition of the road, how steep is the climb and how scenic is the drive. I am driving myself (car). I was planning for a stop over at Madurai on my trip from Bangalore to Munnar. Since the trip is too long I wanted to break somewhere and halt for a night. Other option is to halt in Coimbatore and take Coimbatore Munnar route. Any feedback will be helpful.

madurai to munnar via bodi route is not that good unless you wanna try adventures. again it will take you near to cochin and take a U turn .

but udumalai and maraiyur route is best .
if you are coming from either from coimbatore or salem or madurai

If you drive from Bangalore, I would suggest Bangalore- Mandya-Mysore-Nanjangud-Ch Nagara-Bannari-Sathyamangala-Coimbatore and have your night stay at Coimbatore and try out coimbatore- Munnar Circuit . Bangalore - Theni is kind of Plains and not much scenic and after that too it's the one of the busy highway connecting tamilnadu and Kerala and will be scenic after Bodimettu but I feel Coimbatore - Munnar is better bet !

after theni the road is very bad , narrow , no trees (rocks only), very steep and dangerous hair pin bends and no scenery at all . this was what I observed 1.5 years back.

secondly , about the "U turn near cochin " I posted is an error . actually I went to munnar after that decided to go valparai . eventhouh the valparai is exactly on the other side of munnar (north ) we had to travel via perumbavoor which is almost near to cochin , then we took right turn at chalakudi . - so I confused with the particular trip and posted . I feel sorry for that .
