Which beach in Kerala?

Hello,

Am in Rajasthan at the moment, been travelling around India for about two months and am in need for a couple of weeks relaxation before i fly home (just before christmas).
Kerala sounds interesting, with the backwaters.
Can any of you recommend a nice - sort of quiet- beach there? Preferably one that is not so touristy. For instance, how's Varkala? (Tips for guesthouses also welcome.)

Thanks for helping me out x

Both are quite touristy!

However, Varkala has the benefit of being more convenient for a trip to Kochi or the backwaters ( a railway station )

Be aware that Varkala 'beach' is at the bottom of a steep cliff - whereas Kovalam fronts directly onto it..

I'd go for Varkala - plenty of infrastructure etc..

Enjoy!

Even though Kovalam does not have a cliff, it still has a section of road that some friends of mine call Heart Attack Hill

vypeen island, a short ferry trip from cochin, is lovely and has some reasonably priced accommodation right on the beach.you have to catch a bus from where the ferry stops, about 20min trip (i think it was) and varkala has a more relaxed atmosphere a few minutes walk, north, along a path at the top of the cliffs.

I seem to remeber the cab I was in turning off the engine and freewheeling for quite a bit on the way there. I guess that was the section!
