Where to go in Kerala to chill out for a week
Hiya,
I have less than two weeks and very little money but need a break from the city. I have been to India twice before visting rajasthan and the north but for much longer. This time it's a break from work so just want a bit of sun and relaxation and to feel a million miles away from work. I am taking my partner, and would really like to know where in Kerala would anyone recommend heading to. Gonna get the cheapest flight to India, either to Mumbai or bangalore and then to Trivandrum by train from there? All tips and advice welcome, is Kerala a good option for this type of break? My travel dates are Feb 15th - Feb 28th Many Thanks in advance, Rach ![]() |

Hi and welcome to IM.
Are you not able to fly directly to Trivandrum via Dubai. This would save some travel time & costs, and since you are going to Trivandrum you have 2 choices Kovalam or Varkalha. Kovalam is more full on like Goa.Never been to Varkalha but keep hearing good things about the place. rgds vandy ![]() |

If you are in UK then book a package holiday to Kovalam, choosing the cheapest accomodation. This will give you a direct flight from London to Trivandrum.
Then you can get a bus up to Varkala (1 hr or so from Triv airport) which is a great place to stay and relax, with very reasonably priced accommodation if you look for it. You could even have a two centre break with Kovalam and Varkala this way, giving you four nice beaches.

Got to agree with vandy on this one. probably the best and cheapest way would be to fly dierct (If you're from the UK) on a package to kovolam. Use the hotel to settle and then head north to varkala. accomodation is reasonable in Varkala with places to stay to meet all budgets. When you arrive, one watch the bags (In a cafe) the other does a hotel check (certainly better than carting rucksacks / bags around). The good bit is you can then return to your kovolam hotel before returning home.
Varkala is so much better than Kovolam, much more cosmopolitan and in my opinion - better food. The beaches are good as well as you can 'get away' from the various offers of goods.. There are some wonderful northern beaches however they don't have a proper infrastructure that you may require to support your stay. Have fun |

Recently, i came from kerala trip.
4 days based at kochin - did local sightseeing, backwater trip for 1 day, athirampalli falls and kothanad elephant sanctuary and cherai beach. You can miss local sightseeing. 3 days based at munnar - trip to marayoor and did forest trekking, 1 day usual sight seeing. I recommend trekking in munnar especially to Thoovanam water falls - around 3 km. I missed this one. You can stay near the water falls for 1500 rs per night, 300 rs extra for another person. Imagine, when you wakeup big waterfalls is your shower!!! But, I am a fan of waterfallssssss. If you decide about these places, i give more info to do it cheaply. |

I'd suggest Varkala over Kovalam. Was recently in Varkala on the cliff top - cheap accommodation, cheap but very good food. Also entertainment available most nights at the Funky Art Cafe. Beaches good.

A trip to Munnar for the tea gardens and rolling green hills is well worth it.

Isn't Trivundrum fairly quiet.
If it's a break you want. Trivundrum or Kovalum would be my choice.
