Where to buy a Silk Saree in Cochin

Is it such a good idea? Are there special Kerala style weaves distinct from the more famous silks from Kanjeevaram, Tamil Nadu?
What else to bring back as gifts from Kochi?

While I am not sure if there's a special place to buy sari in Cochin, but if you are in MG Road, check out Jayalakshmi Silks. Largest of its kind I think (They employ thousands of girls - is all I know )

Buy an Onam Kasavu saree instead of a silk saree. Silk sarees are famous in karnataka (mysore silk ) & Tamil nadu ( Kanchipuram). Handicrafts(coir Products)& Handloom items are a good buy

If you want silk, buy silk! They will stock saris from all the different regions, with their distinctive feel and patterns. It is hard to believe that Tussar silk, which crinkles like paper, is made from the same raw material as Benares silk, which is flowing and soft!

Many very beautiful saris are made in cotton too: the prices are very much lower than silk.

I know this is an old thread, but I found Kalyan Silks in Ernakulam off Hospital Road to be absolutely incredible. They have six floors of exquisite saris, ready made and otherwise - and there are tailors on site. I spent a long time there and bought quite a lot of silk. I would have bought more but my luggage was already too heavy! You shall not be disappointed! However, should you like to use their on-site tailor, take care to allow several days to have your item(s) made.
