What time of year does Kerala (and Goa) start getting packed out?

I'm going to make my way out of HP when the chill sets in (as everyone I suppose). I'd heard that by mid November Kerala and esp Goa are really starting to get packed out. Can anyone give me a time that I really 'need' to hav emy but down south?

I'd thought about going to Puskar festival. I did this in 97, it was fun (a tiny bit touristy - I say tiny because I actually went to the fesival and did not just lay about the town eeating banana pancake with th ecool people). Is it now really chock a block full of backpackers and high end toursits??

Can anyone recommend what to have a look at in Kerala. I want to spend some QUIET time at the beach/es. But would lik eto see nature, birds, animals and hill stations.

Whats the definitive word on doing the boat thing? i can cheap it out on an houry basis -is this comprehensive enogh? Whats a proper price for a room on a boat for a few days?? finally, what part of backwaters do i really want to see?

many thanks

3 more days!

The tourists start arriving Oct-Nov onwards in Kerala - this year, I have noticed several French and Italian tourists as early as July-August. I'm told this is unusual by the locals.
I haven't been on a houseboat but the taxi guys tell me it is anywhere from Rs5500 (basic) to Rs8-9,000 (moderate) houseboat per 24 hrs (includes three meals). Bit steep, I thought.

Ya

u r right. The tourist season begins in Kerala and Goa around November. That's because the monsoons are over, and these other hot coastal places are relatives cooler at this time.

November is the best time.

I was in Kerala the first 2 weeks of December and it wasn't too crowded; plenty of rooms at competitive prices were still available in Ft. Cochin and Varkala and for backwater guest houses and boats.

What's the weather like in September? Bearable? Still very wet?
