I will be visiting Kerala during the last week of August 2005. So far my plan is arrive in Thekkady at arround 12:00 noon on August 31 and depart thekkady around noon on Sept 1.

Is this enough time to explore the Periyar Wild life Sanctuary. What other interesting activities exist at Periyar other the boat cruise.

Thekkady is in Periyar wildlife sanctuary area.

You can stay in one of those jungle resorts, and do a wildlife safari. It would be great fun. You can google for more info.

A few possibilities: Tour a spice plantation, visit the Connemara Tea factory, take in a Kathakali performance.

hi,
we were there just last week in Thekkady. The best thing to do is to book the forest guest house at manakkavla ( check the spelling).
1. You have to book well in advance and
2. make sure you go to the Periyal Forest Dept. Office, located in thekkady, atlest ONE DAY in advance, belive me they are closed on SUNDAYS, so watchout.
3. there you get a permit, i mean at the forest office, its about 1 km down the road from Periyar House-a hotel run by KTDC.
4. now you take this permit to the "information center" where the boats are parked.
5. well if you have come this far, you are allmost done, now the guy at the info center will sign it and assign a cook and a guide to along with you.

So now you are set, and how do u go there.

1. Take a boat, before 2 pm, with you, the cook and the guide, PLUS all the FOOD and DRINKING water you need.
2. some where the boat will stop, and you have to hike through the grass for about 4 kms to reach the house.
3. its a big house, and a very nice one.

this is what happened to some one whom i knew when they visited the forest house.

1. some elephants chased them ( vow, that is great)
2. they had to kill a snake inside the house

so your party should be prepared for such emergencies.

But its worth it, go and enjoy it.

good luck

There are a lot of very good home stays available on the street leading to the Periyar Reserve.. they are cheaper than most mid range hotels.. and offer a homely and quiet ambience...

When I went last time a couple of years back Hotel Lake Queen was very good.(But rates were higher around Rs 500/600 )
My blog there is very short ( just started writing around that period)

I remember the Mahaveer Restaurant served excellent vegetarian food.
I am a non-veggie , but the non veg was very spicy and had a aroma of Coconut Oil which made me dizzy.
