What are your favourite places in Kerala?

My husband and I are planning our first trip to India (Kerala and Tamil Nadu). We'll be there for 7 weeks beginning January 2006. I'd love to benefit from all your experiences there. What are your favourite places in Kerala and why?

Munnar: a great place to walk and enjoy the cooler climate of the mountains!
Cherai Beach: a unspoiled stretch of sandy beach lined woth cocnut groves and it's very close to Cochin!
The Backwaters: a gentle sail through some of the most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere in India!

In kerala you are never too far from an interesting place. The sea and the mountains are hardly 70 kilometers apart and Kerala lies in between as a thin long strip of land.

backwaters, mountains, beaches, temples.... and more importantly people. all are great

Just because where ever you are in the world, you never feel like a stranger in a good bar.

Come over to the USA. You will feel just the same drinking in a bar here, as you would slamming a kingfisher in an alley behind a goverment liquor store in Ernakulam.

Regarding Vagamon:
1. How do you get there from Periyar or Munnar? Bus, or taxi, or ...?
2. Can one just show up and look at the various resorts before deciding which on to stay at, or are they spread out and far from eachother?
