I am planning to go to wayanad on coming long weekend along with friend by own car,i'm trekking enthusiastic plan to trek chembra peak, i need the following inputs:

1) best route ?
Route A : Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur- Nagarhole - Kutta - Mananthavadi (Wayanad)

Route B: Bangalore - Mysore - Gundulpet - Munthanga - Sulthan Battery ( Wayanad)

2) which is near place to chembra peak ...kalpetta or vythiri

3) It is good time for camping in Chembra peak ?

4)Possible to get sleeping bags, tents on hire. contact info?

5) If camping not possible then any budget accommodation (i'm fine with basic stuff)near chembra peak : contact info

1.Route A: awesome roads and decent chances of spotting wildlife
Route B: longer route + bad roads in the nagarhole - kutta stretch

Also, since your primary purpose is to ascend the chembra peak, it makes sense to take route A (as this is shorter to reach Kalpetta)

2. Guess both of them should be equi-distant

3. Have read a blog about a group camping on the chembra. Not sure about this season though. Regarding the weather - I had been to Kalpetta 2-3 weeks back and it was drizzling continuously post afternoon.

5. Best to put up at Kalpetta (lot of budget options available)

P.S: You can refer to my blog (in signature) on other sight-seeing places in wayanad and their details. 'Meenmutty falls' especially should be on your list.

If you can search through PM Velu's posts, he has also done a lot of road trips to Wayanad from Mysore.

Please check the Kerala forum. There are numerous threads on wayanad.

You could PM Velu. You could also try PMing 'anurakti', one of our IMers who lives in Kalpetta

My comments inline.. Sorry I did not read through Saran's Post completely ..May be I am giving repear info !

1) best route ?
Route A : Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur- Nagarhole - Kutta - Mananthavadi (Wayanad)

Route B: Bangalore - Mysore - Gundulpet - Munthanga - Sulthan Battery ( Wayanad)

Route B is best if your destination is Wayanad and do not want to See Poor Roads !

2) which is near place to chembra peak ...kalpetta or vythiri

Kalpetta is near to Chembra Peak ! Anyways Vythiri is + 7 kms to kalpetta !

3) It is good time for camping in Chembra peak ?

No I think !. It was intermittently raining in Coorg / Wayanad / Coastal kerala for past 2 weeks and infact I did Kasaragod trip last weekend and it was rainings heavily in the evenings in Coorg & Kasaragod too !

4)Possible to get sleeping bags, tents on hire. contact info?

I think Bangalore is best to get all these !.

5) If camping not possible then any budget accommodation (i'm fine with basic stuff)near chembra peak : contact info

Near to chembra peak, there are No Lodges . Kalpetta is the nearest !
6) any bonus sightseeing wayanad Itinerary (:

Include Soochipara waterfalls which is hardly 7 kms from Chembara !

General :-

From Kalpetta, take Gudalur / ooty road [ From kalpetta, Start towards Calicut and after few kms you will see a signboard for ooty road and in that road after few kms , you will see the signboard for Chembara peak. That's a Right turn and that road will not look like Road at all and is very narrow.

Also to reach chembara peak , you need to travel 7 kms in "Private Plantation Road". Be very careful on this 7 kms , as it has no bankings on the sides and the road is narrow with a Small Car + Auto going in parallel itself is a risk in several spots in that circuit !And after 2 kms you will be stopped by people !

Stop there and you need to walk to the small office and there they will ask you all questions and we need to pay 10 Rs Or 25 Rs / Car [ I don't remember the exact] and there on the Trekking starts ! If you want , you can drive upto a view point from where you have fantastic views of chembara peak !

Have a Fantastic trip !

1) I am not familiar with routes but i think there is ban on night usage of gundlupet road.not ver sure.

2)kalpetta.

3)i have done one day trek.there is a lake halfway .you can camp ther.but you have to carry your camping stuff from b'lore.

4)you will find lots of accomodation in kalpetta.but near or overlooking chembra is very costly.

5)you can try meenmutty falls, pakshipathalam -another peak, soochipara falls etc.

No, there is no ban as of now in both Gundulpet - Bandipur and Gundulpet - Bathery - Kalpetta stretches.

It is Sharan [As Far as I know]! Until August 31st Forest Department implemented the order between 02:00 am to 06:00 am but from Sep 1st week onwards the ban is in force from 09:00 pm to 06:00 am [ Ambulance & other emergency Cases Exempted].There were quite a lot of Hartals happened in Especially Wayanad & Malappuram Areas to remove this ban in past few weeks !!

@DH,

You may call any lodge in Wayanad and check about the Weather before you plan out the trek ! All the best !

Thanks for clarifying, Velu sir!

This is indeed a good step taken by the forest dept to conserve the already dwindling wildlife in this region.
