Trivandrum: Help or I'll go mad :-)

Hi All

I have just relocated to Trivandrum from Bangalore and already I am missing the trekking and boating opportunities around Bangalore.

Can someone advise me of the following :-

1) Is there any Country club branch in Trivandrum

2) Are there any trekking or kayaking areas near to Trivandrum

3) Is there any Sailing or kayaking club in Trivandrum

4) Is there any snooker & pool centre in Trivandrum

5) Are there any isolated place near to Trivandrum where one can go for weekend to relax and getaway from everything somewhere near a waterfall or river.

6) Is there a horse riding school near Trivandrum

Thanks Guys

there are many trekking routes in trivandrum. Neyyar Dam site, Bonakkad, Ponmudi are some of the points.

Before Ponmudi there is a place 'Kallar' You can walk 20 minutes to forest and you reach a wonderful location with a fall. [ask anybody in kallar junction for going to 'meenmutti']

There is a swimming pool in Trivandrum near Vellayambalam. You can take a membership there.

There are beautiful places on the coastline, south of Kovalam. Just start discovering the area.

Can't help you with clubs/pools... I am a sea lover and enjoyed my weekends on the beaches

ok. Haven't realized the combination pool - snooker, but now I understand

Sorry, still can't help.

I guess moving from Bangalore to Trivandrum must be a kind of culture shock. For me going to Bangalore for a short trip after 3 months Trivandrum was almost like going back to a western city.

Thanks to each one of you

Well you can say being a Malayalee raised in North India I am kind of new to kerala customs however the shock has more to do with (no offense to anyone) a kind of narrow mindedness that I find in Kerala. If you get the jest.

I have lived or traveled almost throughout India so a shift from Bangalore to Trivandrum is no big issue though I feel Cochin is a bigger city than Trivandrum.

True I’ll miss the Bangalore pubs & cosmopolitan lifestyle for sometime, but guesswhat I can at last watch a movie for Rs40/- in balcony instead of Rs180/- ;-)

What I really miss and am trying to balance is the trekking and water sports opportunity that is prevalent in & around Bangalore.

I like solitude and would love isolated getaways where I can boat or kayak.

Is this neyyar dam and surroundings an isolated place or would I find houses every where Kerala style.

Federica : I am not a beach person however I would be interested in sea cruise or sailing - do you know of any operator/s who conducts sea cruise at a nominal rate ( or rather fishermen)

How far is Lakshadweep from Trivandrum - is it possible to make it there and back in a weekend?

pvharikrishnan : yes I meant Pool as in snooker however info on swimming pool much appreciated.

Cheers

Kerala-style houses: the concrete cube has quite taken over Kerala, I'm afraid .

Lakshadweep: I guess that, given that a flight is required, that puts anywhere in India close enough for a weekend! But I can't remember where one flies from; if it's Kochi then getting to the airport and back would probably make it into a long weekend.

Thanks for the response Nich H

Actually I meant would the place be crowded by houses - In kerala even in remote ares like waterfall & all are in midst of village or residential areas unlike other states.

I though we can take a ship to Lakshadweep beleive one of them is called Tipu Sultan.

Cheers

Yes, Kerala is highly populated, and, although it is also very green and has lots of agriculture, there does seem to be this thing of never being able to get away from houses.

Sorry, I can't help with sea cruises, but I am sure you can figure it out. Trivandrum is small, so it's easy to discover. There are at least two members from Trivandrum on this board, but they don't seem very active here at the moment.

ABOUT NEYYAR

Neyyar dam surroundings is not isolated area. But you go after Neyar Dam towards places like Kuttappu, Amburi the road is almost isolated. But when you reach these small town it is another kerala Town which is crowded.

ABOUT CRUISE

Contact some fishermen in and around Kovalam They will be ready to take you with them. Usually western tourists were doing this when backpack tourism was popular [Now package tourism is popular].

ABOUT LAKSHADEEP

Lakshadeep is accessible only from Kochi. Daily Flights are there. And ships which are not regular. planning a weekend trip to Lakshadeep is ok. but always give buffer days after the trip since there is every possiblity of being stranded there because of conveyance problem.
