We planned to go to valparai and athirapally falls during this Feb 2nd week. The following are my questions:

1. Is it the right time to visit both these places?
2. How to get to these places from Chennai?
3. We need to cover these places in 2 days (Sat and Sun). So, what are the best places to visit here and how can we schedule visiting these places?

Please help me out.

For Valparai you need to take a train from Chennai to Coimbatore and from there by bus and taxi. For athirapally falls, you need to take a train from Coimbatore to Trishur and from there other modes of transport. important places to visit around Valparai are Balaji temple, Puncha Mugha Vinayagar
Koil and tea estates.

hi i have been there lot of times during my college days and even recently in last december. If you are taking a train you can go to Coimbatore and from there take a bus to Pollachi. From pollachi, there are regular buses to valparai. There are also direct buses from chennai to pollachi. If you can afford, you can even take a cab from coimbatore or pollachi to valparai.

Valparai is 4 hours drive from coimbatore. As you have only 2 days, spend your first day for athirapally. As soon as you arrive at coimbatore or pollachi, take a bus/cab to thrissur and form there go to athirapally. Valparai is 4 hours from athirapally and sholayar dam is enroute. Try to reach Valparai before 6 pm as that road will be infested with wild animals when it is dark. On sunday you can visit bajali temple, chitti vinayakar temple, nallamudi poonjolai and neerar dam. Then return back to coimbatore via aliyar and pollachi.

The best way to get to Valparai/Athirapalli is to take an overnight train from Chennai to Coimbatore. Buses run from Coimbatore to Valparai, and from there change over to bus to Chalakudy.

Distance details are as follows:
Coimbatore-Pollachi 40 kms-Valparai 65 kms

From Pollachi onwards, teh road climbs up steeply thorugh tea estates to Valparai.

From Valparai, the road goes through dense wild jungles after Malakkiparai. Route is as follows:
Valparai-Malakkiparai 22 kms-Sholayar 24-Peringalkuthu Dam 25-Vazhachal 5-Athirapalli 5-Chalakudy 33 kms.

There is absolutely no human settlement between Malakkiparai and Peringalkuthu Dam. Wildlife - elephants and bison - spill over onto the road, and night driving is discouraged. Both Vazhachal and Athirapalli are on the same Chalakudy river.

Chalakudy town is on the NH47 highway from Kochi to Coimbatore. You can hop onto a evening train at Trissur (20 kms from Chalakudy) or Ernakulam (50 kms from Chalakudy) to return to Chennai, which will be embarking in the evening and reaching early morning.

Athirapalli falls is best visited during rains, rest of the year there is water flow but hardly the spectacle it is during Jun-Oct.

There are buses leaving every 5 minutes from Coimbatore for Pollachi. From there buses to Valparai. There are also direct buses from Coimbatore to Valparai, but frequency is less. Better to switch through Pollachi.

Green Hill View is a budget hotel in Valparai.

Roam around Valparai area - there is the Balaji temple, there is Solayar Dam. And there is the road further down to Chalakudy via Athirapalli.

Local buses, autos for local transport.

For Top Slip, you will have to switch through Pollachi. I believe that there is a bus service running till Top Slip (or further till Parambikulam).

YOu can book in advance through Forest Dep in TN (for Top Slip) and KL (for Parambikulam).

Forest Dept has its tours and guides for treks.

This should help for bus timings from pollachi to top slip/parambikulam (if someone could read tamil on your side). The same bus goes to parambikulam via top slip and retuns back to pollachi via top slip.

You could check out a brief log of my day-trip to top slip a few months back here.

To get to Athirapalli from Trichy, you can take the following route:
Trichy-Thuraiyur/Musiri-Namakkal-Dharapuram-Pollachi-Valparai-Malakkiparai-Atirapalli.

The best time to visit Athirapalli is during the rainy season when the falls are in their full glory. In April, expect very little water flow. Ideally visit after July.

There are 2-3 hotels in Athirapalli itself, depending on your budget.Riverok Villas is a budget hotel there.http://www.riverokvillas.com/

Approximately 400 kms.
I have suggested a slightly longer route - shortest will be via Karur - because NH67 via Karur to Gangeyam is being widened and not in good condition. Hence, the longer route via Namakkal (either via Musiri or THuraiyur) and then take the road to Dharapuram. Leave Trichy early, roads are not fast. Note to reach Valparai before 3 pm because the road to Athirapalli is closed from Malakkiparai check post after 6 pm.

Here is one more "budget" hotel, KTDC's Motel Aram in Athirapalli:

I believe there are also a few home stays which may be cheaper.

visit to Pollachi and Valparai

Since it was suggested by the member that April is not the season to visit Athirappalli falls, I want to visit Pollachi/Valparai from Trichy, by car. Our stay will be for 2 days during April end.

Kindly mention the sight seeing places at these places and we will be leaving Trichy at 5 AM on 22.04.11 and on 23.04.11 evening we will likely to return Mettupalayam. Kindly mention how to make our programme?

Where we can stay either at Pollachi or Valparai?

Stay at Valparai.

If you want, go through my trip report of December 2010 which has details about sightseeing, accommodation etc:
Valparai Trip

PS: Only BSNL mobile works there

If you want to visit Top Slip, then stay at Pollachi or closer to Top Slip.
