Hello everyone,

I need some advise in self booking/arranging a 5-7days tour to Kerala, places which I would like to visit are Munnar, Alleppy & Tekkady with 2 nigh stays in each of these places or you can recommend any other near by places to be visited, it must include exploring Wild life, Elephant ride, house boat, Shikara or fishing & some activities.

We would like to travel as local rather than a tourist (Flashy car, hotels etc) so enjoy the local essence. I'm looking for advise and recommendation in booking Budget car rental / Bus if its available between these places, home stays or hotels, local food to be tried at these places and nice restaurants (Halal or seafood is preferred ) & places or points to be visited at these places.

Thanks for your time

Alee

The posts that you mention did not have advise / recommendations? It is highly unlikely that pmvelu misses it. If there are advise / recommendations they would be same now also.

Thanks Aarosh for providing recent write-ups on kerala which will for sure help OP(Alee).

Alee,

There is a outbreak of "Dengue Fever" in kerala currently and even today,I saw a detailed write-up in newspapers. So if you have plans within a month or so , please postpone(Just to be on safer side).

Also, let me know your tentative travel month , Group composition (Old/young/family) so that I could share related info.

@Alee,

Based on your interests, you could plan as follows:-

Munnar ( Tea Gardens, Tea plantation Visit and other tourist places of munnar) - 2 nights/ 3 days. Munnar has "Ravikulam wildlife sanctuary" but it's more to view niligiri tahr than "wild animals" .
Thekkady ( You can read through the "4 days at thekkady" link in aarosh's post)- If it interests you, you may make that to 2 nights/ 3 days. Here you can attend Cultural programme /Martial arts (Kathakali, kalaripayattu etc), Boating, Widlife viewing, Elephant feeding, washing, riding centre )
Alleppey : There are few resorts / homestays just on the banks of vembanad lake and please do a search and find one. Such a type of place will have option of Fishing, Shikara ride/Houseboat (you can board directly from such a property) Bathing in Vembanad lake ( Not sure on your comfort level, BUT locals use the lake for bathing . We never tried that).plan 1 day/night here.
Have Kochi as base and hire cab and do Munnar/thekkady and ask him to drop you at Alleppey. For alleppey, you do not need Cab .

Munnar's tourist places are spread across and hence you need a cab.
For thekkady, If you are interested more on the places mentioned in the link, you need cab. If your primary interest is on periyar lake boating + wildlife viewing and cultural shows/ elephant centre, you dont need cab.
For alleppey, if you are only for shikara/houseboat and not interested in visiting Marari beach (A pristine white sanded beach 1 hour from alleppey) , you dont need cab.

Above plan is to cover ALL what you are interested in. Also, please remember December-Jan1st week is the PEAKEST season for all the places you are interested and hence prices will be 40% UP compared to normal prices .

Local delicacies I could think of : Beef, karimeen polichathu (which is a variety of fresh water fish caught from n vembanad lake and FYI it's extremely costly 500 INR per fish ) and typical keralan food (Read puttu, idiyappam, kadala curry, Fish curry).

I don't have idea on rental cars or high end restaurants / Fine dining.

Hope this is of some help.
If you need more info, please post.

velu.
